9 More Soldiers Killed in Iraq, Tally for April Almost 100

As President Bush continues to dig in on staying the course in Iraq, our troops keep dying. Nine were killed this weekend.

April has been the deadliest month for U.S. soldiers in Iraq this year. The latest deaths raise to nearly 100 the number of U.S. soldiers killed this month.

Waiting for the Iraqis to Stand Up (none / 0) (#1)

Does anyone remember Bush's statement that "as Iraqis stand up, we will stand down"?  Perhaps a more accurate statement should have been "as we wait for the Iraqis to stand up, we will continue to be shot down."

The Iraqis are not standing up and they are not going to be standing up.  According to McClatchy newspapers " Military planners have abandoned the idea that standing up Iraqi troops will enable American soldiers to start coming home soon . . . Pentagon officials said they know of no new training resources that have been included in U.S. plans to dispatch 28,000 additional troops to Iraq . . . In nearly every area where Iraqi forces were given control, the security situation rapidly deteriorated. The exceptions were areas dominated largely by one sect and policed by members of that sect."

What this means is that we will not be standing down.  American soldiers will be doing the majority of the fighting and dying while we "wait for the Iraqis to do something."

To Be Fair and Balanced (none / 0) (#2)

In order to balance my criticism of the Bush administration I thought I should add some thoughts from my conservative and Republican friends who helped get us into this war.  We've had in April some of the highest number of casualties since the war began but we should remember this (sarcasm alert):

"Americans are being love-bombed by Baghdadis on a daily basis . . . Everywhere they go, Americans are cheered and thanked profusely."  Mona Charen 5/9/03

". . . military action will not last more than a week."  Bill O'Reilly 1/29/03

These and other perceptive quotes can be found on Tom Tomorrow's cartoon Four Years Later.

It occurs to me that we have not yet built a memorial to those killed in Iraq.  May I suggest that any memorial we build include some of these quotes.
