About The Surge: BushCo Does Not Want To Know

Via Kevin Drum, the NYTimes tells us what we already knew, Bush's surge policy is a sham, merely designed to run out the clock on Iraq while Bush is President:

The Bush administration will not try to assess whether the troop increase in Iraq is producing signs of political progress or greater security until September, and many of Mr. Bush’s top advisers now anticipate that any gains by then will be limited, according to senior administration officials.

In interviews over the past week, the officials made clear that the White House is gradually scaling back its expectations for the government of Prime Minister Nuri Kamal al-Maliki. The timelines they are now discussing suggest that the White House may maintain the increased numbers of American troops in Iraq well into next year.

. . . Several American officials who have spoken recently with Mr. Maliki say they believe that he would like to achieve the kind of political reconciliation that Mr. Bush outlined in January as the ultimate goal of the troop increase. But they say the Iraqi prime minister appears to have little ability to manage the required legislation, including bills requiring fair distribution of oil revenues among Iraq’s Sunnis, Shiites and Kurds, and reversing the American-led de-Baathification that barred many Sunnis from participation in the new government.

(Emphasis supplied.) This is predictable. Bush's feelings are what drive policy now. We can't have him face the fact that he lost the Iraq Debacle and is the worst President in history. That he destroys our military, irreparably damages our national interest and causes the needless deaths of our soldiers is of no moment compared to his feelings.

Disgusting.

    and about our military (5.00 / 2) (#2)

on another site I commented yesterday that it would take 5-10 years to get our military back in shape. Another poster commented that it would take a generation to bring our officer corps back to par.

There is a lot of work to do.

And that's just the military. The rest of the government will have to be thoroughly vetted to remove Robinson and Falwell acolytes from the bureaucracy. We can't have these Regent trained zealots interfering with the smooth operation of their departments.

that's more brazenly homicidal than encouraging the deliberate killing of more soldiers and civilians just so President George W. Bush can leave office without having to change his mind. It's like Rove grabbing a small animal and saying, "You know, I went through the trouble of capturing this small animal, I might as well rip its head off. No turning back now, yo! Whee!"

    This Administration, its Party affiliation... (5.00 / 1) (#4)

and Base are only going to prolong this entire mess until they can successfully attach the failure onto the opposition party. They know very well that this whole attempt of making their power grab, financial enrichening plans and World control failed miserably and now they want to have the sole rights to proclaim that someone else botched up their dreams. They have done it in Vietnam and in many ways they were able to associate "being weak on National Security" and just "being weak" to any party who does not talk as tough as they do.

Just listen to the propaganda they are already spreading: "If we pull out now it will be a blood bath and the blood will be on the defeatocrats", "surrendercrats", and "our way of life will be in jeapordy if we pull out of Iraq and the terrorist will win".

Their propaganda will broadcast daily in every form of media and those easily influenced who think and decide with emotions will fall prey to the message machines.

Talking tough and actually being tough are entirely two different issues. Unfortunately for all of us, we were all lead into stupidity by those who can only talk tough!

Bush and his cronies will not escape justice and accounting simply because their time runs out.

They are depending on that.  It should not be allowed to happen.  He deserves ignominy and that is what he must get.

    feeling ignominy.

LWOP is probably a better way to go. At least it would give him lots of time to continue not thinking about the things he's done.

    Bush Won't Report (5.00 / 2) (#7)

    But
Warren Strobel and Jonathan S. Landay of McClatchy report that the annual State Department on terrorism will report a nearly 30% rise over the previous year, most of it accounted for by attacks in Iraq and Afghanistan.

    Juan Cole

The "surge" seems to be having the effect of increasing terrorism.

    It's working then. (5.00 / 1) (#8)

So withdrawing troops from Iraq will result in increased terrorism, and adding troops result in increased terrorism.

In both cases, more people will die according to your logic.

Sounds like a very strong win win argument for pulling out all the troops NOW.

It has nothing to do with the surge (none / 0) (#13)

The report covers 2006 and thus doesn't include post-surge numbers:

A State Department report on terrorism due out next week will show a nearly 30 percent increase in terrorist attacks worldwide in 2006 to more than 14,000, almost all of the boost due to growing violence in Iraq and Afghanistan, U.S. officials said Friday.

What BTD said.  Thanks for articulating what I've been thinking.

The only thing I can add is more documentation of Bush's failure in Iraq - Rebuilt Iraq Projects Found Crumbling and Training Iraqi troops no longer driving force in U.S. policy.

shocked i tell you! well, actually, not at all. mores the pity really.

this has to be the single most inept administration in our country's relatively short history.  these people would collectivelly screw up a wet dream.

unfortunately (or fortunately, depending on your view) incompetence, by itself, is neither an impeachable offense, nor grounds for criminal action. as well, there are those of his followers who will swear this was all a plot by dems, to make bush look bad.

good thing the dems can point to their own ineptidude, as a defense against those charges. no way they could they have possibly cooked up anything this complex.

bush, of course, needs no help looking bad, he does a stellar job all by himself.
