    Gravel (5.00 / 1) (#1)
by Carolyn in Baltimore on Thu Apr 26, 2007 at 07:54:38 PM EST
He won't win but I sure hope he stays in for a long time. He has passion and he's right.

Best line: "we'll be as successful fighting terrorism as we were fighting drugs.".

    Any other references (none / 0) (#3)

    Debate (5.00 / 2) (#4)
by Dulcinea on Thu Apr 26, 2007 at 08:08:06 PM EST
Hillary topped them all; Biden was surprisingly good--loved his one word answer; Edwards was surprisingly weak; Obama doesn't cut it with me; Dodd is such a nice man; Richardson is a blowhard; Gravel must have been an interesting Senator; the last to mention is the least unless he's running for pastor in some small parish.

    Hillary won (5.00 / 1) (#6)

    She seemed the most confident.

    Edwards seemed subdued.

Obama stumbled out of the gate.

It's time to vote for the Gravel/Stockdale ticket.

Richardson said he most admired Byron White of dissenting vote in Roe, overrule vote in Casey, and criminalize homosexuality in Bowers v. Hardwick fame. (Richardson was tonight's biggest loser).

Is Kucinich's firing of police chief on live TV on YouTube?

    Dodd and Biden did well.

MSNBC did a good job of "Fox"ing up the debate around Republican narratives, including the asking of a question about whether the candidates would vote against popular opinion by legalizing amnesty.  The polls I've seen show that most people favor amnesty.  Maybe MSNBC gets its polling info from Andrea Mitchell.

Do they have to do this again? (4.50 / 2) (#5)

While Gravel sounded like the crazy uncle who'd been locked in the attic since the Cuban missile crisis, both he and Kucinich gave the most rational and refreshing responses.

The so-called top tier candidates appeared to regurgitate the neocon/AIPAC talking points rather poorly. They need more rehearsal time with Kristol and Cheney.

Obama and Richardson were the least impressive of the bunch. In particular, Obama's responses were not focused, consistently shallow, and loaded with tired platitudes. In my opinion, Obama was the least prepared and the least convincing. Richardson, on the other hand, sounded like a pompous gas bag, who was more interested in how he sounded rather than substance.

Lastly, the whole sorry affair tonight illustrated eight reasons why Gore needs to get into the race later this year.

    Gravel came off as crazy... (4.00 / 1) (#2)

Richardson didn't fare so well either - I expected better from him.

Overall, Hillary and Obama did the best, though Obama shouldn't have gotten into that squabble.

    I'm sorry to say that Richardson didn't (5.00 / 1) (#7)

    seem polished enough.

Not that polish is so important, but in the absence of burning passion, good insight, vision, he's looking weaker than I expected.

If I were voting based on just that debate (none / 0) (#9)

I'd be deliberating between Dodd and Biden. What that says about me, I don't know.

    If I were ...... (5.00 / 1) (#12)

Dodd acquitted himself very well. Biden did OK. Richardson, who I for a while liked a lot, has now lost me. He can be SoS but not be my Pres.
Hillary did OK but lost me on the first question on Reid and treason. It was a lose-lose question so she avoided it - and lost an opportunity to re-frame what a lost war means. All of the front runners accept the framing by the media (and the questions sucked big time). Obama - weak.

Dodd got my attention. Biden did well but I know him too well. Kucinich has good answers and framing but can't be passionate and statesmanlike.

Gravel - had all the best lines and spoke truth to power. He looked crazy but he wasn't.

But we're not voting today. The whole thing made me want Gore more.
