On Imus: Rich Gets One Thing Right, He Is A Hypocrite

We all wondered how Frank Rich would try and dance away from his enabling history regarding Don Imus. And predictably, he calls everyone a hypocrite, pulling out the Al Sharpton card. But Rich gets one thing right, he is a hypocrite:

Among the hypocrites surrounding Imus, I’ll include myself. I’ve been a guest on his show many times since he first invited me in the early 1990s, when I was a theater critic. I’ve almost always considered him among the smarter and more authentic conversationalists I’ve encountered as an interviewee. As a book author, I could always use the publicity. Of course I was aware of many of his obnoxious comments about minority groups, including my own, Jews. Sometimes he aimed invective at me personally. I wasn’t seriously bothered by much of it, even when it was unfunny or made me wince, because I saw him as equally offensive to everyone. The show’s crudest interludes struck me as burlesque.

We never heard that from Frank Rich before. NOW he is brave with his opinions about Imus. Shame on you Frank Rich. Take your lumps and stop trying to drag everyone else down with you. And to call this a free speech issue is a joke. We're supposed to worry about the freedom to tell racist and sexist jokes? What a crap column from Frank Rich.

op-ed columnists for their failure to be partisan. just a thought: that would  be the point of op-eds.

and though the punditry world has not exerted much discipline with its  mostly overt partisanship, I see no reason why Rich should be consigned to the dumpster on this issue, though I may disagree with him.

That it is not acceptable and will not remain is.

Miss D you are a funny, intelligent, sometimes briliant, person.

I know you have much animosity towards me but you have to leave that at the door here. If it was my site, we could go at it till the cows came home.

by amethyst on Sat Apr 14, 2007 at 06:08:22 AM EST

Talk to us some more about his "blind spot".  You said in the other thread that Markos is "not good on gender issues".  Can you explain to us what that means?  What are his beliefs?
Because hey, this guy is supposed to be the leader of the leftwing blogosphere, and if he has a problem with gender issues, that's a big deal.

It would be great if Daily Kos was better on gender issues
It is not and it will not be. We have to deal with that. It will not change.

Then it will die.  Or it will become a kind of Conservative-Democrat "Free Republic", useless in achieving any meaningful change and advancement in our society.

I most certainly didn't come here just to rate your comments. I came here to join the conversation. Your comments in this thread are the first time I realized that you even post here.

You made it clear over and over at dkos that you don't like BTD. I guess BTD was just trying to show an open mind by inviting you here, but for the life of me I really cannot see why you are here or what good your presence serves here. Your comments show you are just here to carry on the attacks against BTD, and by extension anyone like me who doesn't have any interest in your agenda. Take it somewhere else.

Ain't it just wondrous, look at the number of folks who went on the Imus show to peddle their wares & the old reprobate punked 'em right on the spot.

    How lame.

This is amazing: Imus interviews me & we shill for my new book, then Bernie & the I-man run an unfunny riff about my ethnic background.

I'm hot and cold on Rich. On the one hand, it's difficult to forgive him for the narritive about Al Gore that he participated in perpetuating. I also take Bob Somerby's criticisms of him seriously.

On the other hand, I think Rich is fundamentally an ally against the W. myth. I also think that the position he expresses in this particular column is more nuanced than what we got from Bill Maher last night. He mentions Shaprton, but  saves his strongest words for Coluter and Beck (you'll notice that he links to Aravosis).

Maybe he should engage in some stronger self-criticism, but I'm not willing to condemn him just yet.

    clearly, timing is everything.

how about this for a semi-original concept, with regards to mr. imus: perhaps, being rude, obnoxious and, let's face it, a mostly incomprensible bore to everyone, isn't a sign of equity, it's just a sign of a rude, obnoxious, mostly incomprehensible bore.

frankly, the few times i listened to the guy, it sounded like he had rocks in his mouth, or had recently suffered a stroke, rendering clear speech impossible. amazing stroke of luck (bad, in his case) that one of few times i could actually understand him, he's calling an entire women's college basketball team "nappy headed ho's".

personally, it makes no difference to me if he stayed or went, i always thought the guy was a fu*ktard.

What a disappointment! I couldn't finish the column. It seemed like defensiveness (we're ALL hypocrites, after all) and obtuseness (if Sharpton did it, Imus can do it, and it's free speech anyway, and what's a little hate speech on the side when we're dealing with SERIOUS issues or when we have a book to sell) combined to form incoherence.
