FL Settles Boot Camp Death Claim

Martin Anderson's life ended in his 14th year, when he was beaten to death in a Florida boot camp (more here and here). Gov. Crist announced today that Florida will pay $5 million to settle the claims of Martin's family.

Seven guards and a nurse were charged with manslaughter in November over the death of Anderson, whose beating by guards was caught on videotape.

    if Mr. Anderson was fourteen when he was killed, his life ended in his fifteenth year.

    It defies belief that institutions such as the one that killed Martin Anderson could possibly exist in a country that calls itself civilized.

    Then again they give half to the lawyers,half of what's left goes to the taxman...

    unless taxable income is being compensated for. i doubt that's the case with a 14 year-old. the only reason anyone was punished, was because it was caught on tape. absent that, and i'd bet money they'd have gotten away with it.

    the moral of this story: don't videotape your beatings.
