Rocking the Oscars

Yes, I blog about the Oscars. Every year. I'm just as interested in the clothes and the red carpet goings-on as I am in the movies.

But this year, I'm also into the music. There will be performances by James Taylor, Beyonce, Jennifer Hudson, Randy Newman, Melissa Etheridge and more.

More viewers are expected this year because many of the awards, including Best Picture, are up in the air. Babel or The Departed?

Predictions anyone?

Yes. A thousand lesbians with assault weapons will storm the building and force the proceedings to be relevant to actual events going on in the world.

Personally? I'm rooting for militia Etheridge!

Jeralyn, I feel I have to post a comment just to say I'm with you - I love the Oscars!  And that doesn't make me any dumber or less interested in grittier, more serious topics.

Unfortunately,  being in the UK, I would have to stay up half the night to watch the oscars live and so now that I have young children who are yet to fully understand the meaning of the term 'lie-in' I don't usually bother to watch.

I have very fond memories, though, of the 1994 Oscars, when Holly Hunter was one of the winners.  I travelled from San Fransciso to Chicago that night and on arriving at the home of the two university professors I was staying with, I was greeted with the female standing up and exclaiming at the TV, 'Oh Holly, you so deserve it, but that dress - it's so ugly!'

I am on a late inning rush to catch up on nominated movies and I watched "The Departed" last night.

I can't remember a movie ever bing so enjoyable for the first 2 hours and then so horrible for the last 1/2 hour.

    What did you think Jeralyn?

I thought I had accidentaly turned on the special features with the alternate ending.    It was ridiculous.

I had heard the ending was a little weak but I couldn't have expected such an odd ending.   There were about 10 better ways to end that moive and none of them where taken.

What was so dissapointing was I'd spent 2 hours getting to know all these great characters and the movie let me down.

Also Alec Baldwin could have had some more screen time.   He's turning into a great character actor that always seems to nail his role in movies.

    I liked The Departed (none / 0) (#5)

I saw it with the TL kid in New York the week it opened.  I thought it was really good and that Jack Nicholson and Leonard DiCaprio were terrific.  Best picture?  I don't know about that, but having just seen Babel which was a big disappointment, I won't be surprised.

I liked The Queen, but I don't see that as Best Picture.

I haven't seen Dream Girls though.

Like I said the moview was great I am just a big fan of wrapping it up with a great ending.

Didn't you tink all the killing at the end was a little much?  I would have preferred the good guy gets the girl and all that but so be it.

Have't seen Babel or most of the other movies because the 1yr old keeps us on our toes and it's hard to get out to the movies.   Plus we've invested in one of those home theatres and they make it even harder to call the babysitter.

The only movie I saw in the theatre this year I'm ashamed to say was Talladega Nights.

Why didn't that get any nominations?

Personally I spend most of the red carpet time making sure our guests are tended to, but when the awards start, I don't miss a word.

My time in the industry is mostly spent with cinematographers, so that's the category I most identify with. I'm probably closest to Chivo Lubeski, so I hope he wins.

As an aside, your profound interest in music makes me surprised that I don't see threads on American Idol. Despite any and all legitimate criticisms the show gets, each show has several real musicians who can touch our souls and could make a difference...

    Ah well, enjoy tomorrow night!
