Jane of Firedoglake talked me into it. I'll be joining her and other bloggers in Des Moines from December 31 through January 4 to cover the Iowa caucuses being held Jan. 3.

The race is so close between Hillary, Obama and Edwards that it's just too exciting not to be there personally and analyze the dynamics, the mood, the goings-on and the last minute efforts of the candidates to get out the vote.

If you are able to send a few bucks TalkLeft's way for expenses (or even just for holiday cheer) that would be very appreciated.

    I covered the Libby trial with Jane and Marcy and posted some on Firedoglake. Arianna of Huffington Post got me my press pass and most of my coverage was at HuffPo. I also posted at TalkLeft.

    That was some awesomeness.  I think you guys embarrassed the MSM, because your coverage was so much more insightful and thorough than any crap they printed.  They looked like amateurs.

    Someone should really put all your coverage on that on its own web page, or in one place. I think it will have real historical value.

    Hahahaha. Well, you'll love it. Went there every Xmas for almost 25 years, was trapped by cold and weather many times. Be prepared to extend your stay. Colorado is like the Bahamas by comparison.

    Go eat at the Drake Diner. There, I gave you a good tip. Plus, you really ought to read the Bill Bryson book about growing up in Des Moines. If you have a chance, which you won't, go to Dubuque instead, then drive up to Balltown and have some fried ice cream.

    Iowa is a very interesting place. We could trade the whole Confederacy for two Iowas and still come out ahead.

    What's that steak place near Grinnell in which you pick it out and they cut it and ... if I remember right.... you grill... had a big fireplce..

    ...and that certainly applies to spending the New Years in Dead Moines. I should know, having spent 25 winters there.  

    Are you lucky enough to be be staying at the Downtown Marriott or Hotel Fort Des Moines? In not, you'll probably be stuck out in the hinterlands.  

    At least the food will be good--if you like dairy, meat and Italian.   And, the people, for the most part, are some of the best you'll ever want to meet.

    If you bring me back some Anderson-Erickson dip (Party or French Onion), small curd cottage cheese and some Hiland potato chips, I will make it worth your while!

    come to think of it, the words "party", and "Iowa", in the same sentence, would have to be, by definition, an oxymoron!

    pity the rest of the state.  I grew up in Burlington, which is the fifth largest city in the State of Iowa.  Population always hovers around 30,000.

    I'm sensing a Mississippi coast bias in your postings, Oculus.  

    We didn't have have Spitzing chips in the Capital City, so Hiland's are what I was raised on and what my sensitive palate still craves.  Ah, those Iowa potatoes...

    I don't have pity on anyone who willingly resides in the Hawkeye state.  It is a choice after all.  Fine for some, but not all.  Great place to be from, as they say.  Great place to raise a family as well.  But otherwise?

    That's why I left for bright lights and big city that is Denver many years ago and only go back to watch a football game now and again.

    A good friend of my brother's, on the other hand, after many years living in Chicago, bought an old house on the bluffs above the Mississippi (see, I can still spell it!), restored the house, and moved back to Burlington.  However, he and his wife still have a wonderful condo with a view of Lincoln Park and Lake Michigan near Old Town in Chicago.
