His indictment encompasses 16 counts and, according to the paper his exposure is 142 years incarceration, $4 mil plus in fines, and restitution of the free rent and free renovations he got.

There will be a press conference at about 11:30 ET by the US Attorney's office.

Prosecutors from U.S. Attorney Michael Garcia's office and the FBI agents who've investigated Kerik for the last two years wheeled cartloads of documents into the grand jury room early yesterday.

After more than three hours, the jury foreman emerged and went before Federal Magistrate George Yanthis and the courtroom was sealed. Grand jury foremen must swear before a judge that the indictment voted on by the jury is authentic. Prosecutor Elliot Jacobson, who accompanied the foreman, declined to allow reporters in the courtroom, stating, "This is a closed proceeding."

On the way out of court, one grand juror said, "They said it was going to be a long day."

The federal charges have far more serious consequences, both for Kerik and his mentor, Giuliani, who promoted him to run the city's jails, then to lead the NYPD, and finally pushed him for the Homeland Security job. Kerik's lawyer, Kenneth Breen, who did not return calls yesterday, has said he will fight any charges.

Based on the usual timeline for contested federal cases, that could mean the Kerik saga will play out month after month throughout the election season.
