MSNBC Considering Rosie O'Donnell for Prime Time

The New York Times reports that MSNBC is so happy with Keith Olbermann, it is thinking of adding liberal shows to its nighttime lineup. The article devotes a lot of space to anonymous network execs who say Rosie O'Donnell is under serious consideration as a prime-time show host.

Two NBC executives acknowledged yesterday that they were talking to Rosie O’Donnell about a prime-time show on MSNBC.

I hope NBC is just floating her name just to gauge the reaction. It would be a huge mistake in my opinion.

MSNBC needs to stop playing catch-up and start being innovative. Surely there's someone with a modicum of journalistic credentials and a less antagonizing personality than Rosie. If they are committed to going the comedienne-day time talk route, I'd rather see them move Ellen DeGeneres into prime time. At least she's funny.

Seriously, though, who would you tell MSNBC to hire?

gimme George Carlin or Lewis Black...I'd love to hear those guys shredding our leaders daily.

I'd rather watch Hannity and Colmes than Rosie...at least they make me laugh, unintentionally.

After that creepy pet adoption issue, and esp. that she took more than one episode to have a diatribe about it, when there's stuff going on in the world (hell in our country) that's a bit more significant... (Sudan, N.O. for starters) I don't see myself being too interested in her being a primetime host.

What about?

-Tavis Smiley, on PBS, he's a guy with pretty well-thought comments and a lot of charm, I think. He seems to have a good rep with the public broadcasting folks.

-Cenk Uygur, from The Young Turks. Funny, temperamental, pop culture junkie and he's tough on capitulating Dems, something I like. Sadly, he's quite rough around the edges, and some of his points sound a little Republican, but he's still a good candidate I think.

-Al Gore. If he won't run, why not make him a popular TV host to take on FNC in the primetime? Class, humor, education and political experience, he's got it all.

The line that cost Howard Cosell his job was, "Look at that little monkey go!"

The diatribe that cost Limbaugh his ESPN job after only two weeks was, "I think what we've had here is a little social concern in the NFL. The media has been very desirous that a black quarterback do well. There is a little hope invested in McNabb, and he got a lot of credit for the performance of this team that he didn't deserve. The defense carried this team."

I don't see any politics in either one, and of course Limbaugh kept his record intact by being 100% wrong. The "media" do not choose starters, a coach who gets paid to win chooses them.

Side note. While McNabb may not be a hall of fame QB, he has been a starter in the NFL for a while and played in a Superbowl. You don't get that out of a Crackerjack box. Rush Limbaugh is not qualified to lick McNabb's jock clean, no matter how much he wants to.

Howard stepped over the line, inadvertently perhaps. I really don't know. But whatever else, it was dumb.

Limbaugh's comment was also stupid. Was he accurate re the "press" and "black quarterback?" I don't think so. As for the NFL's social concern, there was a lot of calling for black coaches, which I agree with. Like it or not, for years and years there was a ton of racism in professional sports. Hiring black coaches was needed, and has been done.

As for McNabb.. I have no idea, being neither a Philly fan nor dedicated NFL follower... I have enough trouble right now at Invesco Field at Mile High...

had no record of being a bigot (actually much the opposite, he defended Ali and other black athleteds long before it was common) so it is much easier to accept his explanation that he meant nothig derogatory with his ill chosen off the cuff reference. Limbaugh's comments about McNabb were premeditated and crafted and come from a person whose reputation is one of a cynical exploiter of racial politics.

if they are going for entertainment i would love to see someone like Margret Cho, Her and rosie were both on the True COlors tour and not only was margret way funnier than Rosie, she had a better handle on the facts.
AS far as news goes i would say Ariana Huffington. But i really wish they would give David Schuster his own show. He is an excellent reporter, very fair and heavy on facts.

MSNBC being interested in Rosie really baffles me. Dan Abrams would crusade against her every night when she was on the view. Isn't he like the manager or something of MSNB? Ohh and am i the only one that thinks Dan Abrams is hot?

David Shuster does a great job sitting in for Tucker. He's surprisingly funny. But I'd really love to see Rachel Maddow get a show.

...would all work pretty well, I think. Yank Tucker for the new show, and find a way to encourage Chris Matthews to spend more time away from his show, to have David Gregory and/or David Schuster on more frequently.

Also, if Tucker's liberal replacement gets boffo ratings while Glenn Beck continues to tank at CNN, perhaps they'll get the hint, too.

he was making gains when he got canned and he has to have broader appeal than Rosie. I also love Arianna but I am not certain she can carry an hour show.

I also love Jeralyn and if Greta can do it (not a slight against greta as she is pretty good in her own right and i emphasize right) there is no reason why Jeralyn couldn't......
