Late Night: 1976 and Hotel California

An early version. What's your favorite verse? I've got two:

Her mind is Tiffany-twisted, she got the Mercedes Benz
She got a lot of pretty, pretty boys that she calls friends
How they dance in the courtyard, sweet summer sweat.
Some dance to remember, some dance to forget

and

'Relax,' said the night man,
'We are programmed to receive.
You can check-out any time you like,
But you can never leave!'

And I do have one serious post up today, over at Huffington Post, This Thanksgiving, Most of All. A snippet:

What I'm most thankful for is that I'm not in jail eating processed turkey on a plastic plate.

I'm thinking about the children of the incarcerated. There are more than 2.4 million kids with parents languishing in our jails and prisons due to legislators who insist on being tough rather than smart on crime.

America, Prison Nation, has been a costly and harmful failure.

It's politically incorrect to like the Eagles... (none / 0) (#1)

However, apparently it's my night tonight, since you posted Hotel California and over at C&L Howie Klein put up some Lindsey Buckingham.

Thank you for your political incorrectness.

    Nah. (5.00 / 2) (#2)

It's not un-PC, The Eagles just appeal to a lot of people who are 16. A lot of those people carry that piece of 16 with them for the rest of their lives. You don't choose whether or not to like the Eagles unless you're Jeffrey Lebowski, The Eagles choose you. You go to a party, maybe smoke some pot, definitely drink a beer, and someone says, "My grandpa turned me onto these dudes, check 'em out."

    "On a dark desert highway..."

Memories of songs are tied to events.... Whenever I hear "Rock Around the Clock," I can still remember watching "Blackboard Jungle," on a dim Drive-In movie screen and o la la! How sweet! How sweet!

That's why golden oldies collections sell, and why people go see artists that are usually well past their prime.

Some artists, a very few, manage to transcend generations. I was lucky enough to see Sinatra several times when he still had all his powers. Can the Eagles do it?? I don't know and don't care. The memories they bring back are more important than caring if someone thinks enjoying them makes me "16."

And if that be true, I guess Bob Seeger is out of the question...

    And those Hollywood nights
    In those Hollywood hills
    She was looking so right
    In her diamonds and frills
    Oh those big city nights
    In those high rolling hills
    Above all the lights
She had all of her skills
