Leahy A No On Mukasey

TPM reports that Senate Judiciary Committee chairman Pat Leahy (D-VT) will vote no on the AG nomination of Michael Mukasey.

Will Mukasey be defeated in committee? Depends I think on Schumer and Feinstein. Frankly, I have little confidence they will vote against Mukasey. And if they do and Mukasey is defeated in committee? What then? Normally, that would be that. But Harry Reid has been pretty lousy lately so it is possible he will give Mukasey a floor vote where he would almost certainly be confirmed.

that, if he can't get Mukasey confirmed, we'll just have to do without an AG until the end of Bush's term, during this war on terror.  What's wrong with that picture?

I heard Bush say Mukasey deserves an up-or-down vote. So does SCHIP and a timetable for Iraq withdrawal.

But as soon as Mukasey opened his mouth in defense of Bush's expansion of executive powers, he should have been shown the door, with a nice shoe imprint on his butt.

It took his CYA attitude to Bush's drowning torture before someone took a good look at this guy? Who else would George put in but someone who implictly supports his policies, and will go along with any and all illegal activities?

Reject him, he's Gonzales with a better resume.

NTodd reports he heard Feinstein and Schumer are voting 'Yes' on Mukasey in the Judiciary committee.

Sadly, Chuckles Schumer has apparently convinced DiFi to support Mukasey (no linky, just heard on NPR), presumably because he feels it's more important to save face having suggested the guy to Bush in the first place rather than, you know, standing up to an administration that tortures.

    Also...

National Journal, 11/2: "At least two of the Democratic holdouts, Dianne Feinstein and Charles Schumer, were until now expected to support the former federal judge's nomination to replace Alberto Gonzales, who left DOJ in mid-September. As an early Mukasey backer, Schumer will find it risky to turn around and oppose the nomination. Feinstein was also expected to vote for Mukasey; she will appear with ranking Republican Arlen Specter on CNN's "Late Edition" on Sunday."

It's the Chuckie and DiFi show!
