Rudy Speaks at Federalist Society Meeting

Rudy Giuliani was the only Republican presidential candidate to speak at the Federalist Society meeting today in Washington, introduced by his pal and advisor Ted Olson.

Why? Think, the loyal Rudy:

Giuliani was the only presidential candidate to speak to the group, a testament to his close ties to Olson and other prominent members of the organization. Several of them are advising his campaign and have served as a bulwark for Giuliani against criticism from social conservatives.

As for what he said: He'd appoint more judges like Alito, Thomas and Scalia. He threw in some religion:

"There are some people I think nowadays that doubt that America has a special, even a divinely inspired role in the world," he said.

And of course, some terrorism.

"It was this nation that saved the world from the two great tyrannies of the 20th century, Nazism and Communism," he said. "It's this country that's going to save civilization from Islamic terrorism."

The prospect of Rudy gets scarier every day. The Democrats need to stop their bickering and save their attacks for their Republican rivals.

There may be an upside to Rudy's chances improving. If they are improving to a point where he has any reasonable chance of being elected.

The Democratic leadership has the power to end the Iraq occupation. They have the power to turn around all the constitutional abuses of the past few years.

But they have no motivation to do those things.

They are confident that they will win the presidency and a congressional majority next year.

WITHOUT having to end the Iraq occupation, or restore the constitution, or do ANYTHING that voters want them to do.

They are confident that people are more afraid of republicans than they are of having democrats in power who are enabling all the things that republicans are doing.

They will not change, I believe, unless they are in cold sweating fear that they will LOSE the the presidency and a congressional majority next year UNLESS they do those things.

They want to win the presidency and the Congress next year.

    They NEED the votes.

But they are counting on people being more afraid of Republicans than of them, and giving them a Congressional Majority and the presidency. Out of Fear.

Perhaps Rudy's campaign will put enough fear into Democrats to make them finally sit up, pay attention, and finally do the job they were elected to do last year, even if it is only in the interest of self preservation.

but that point's moot, until that rival is actually selected. i remain unconvinced that rudy will be the one, too many skeletons in his closet.

the one that truly sends shivers down my spine is romney. not quite as bugf*ck crazy as huckabee, but running a close second.

He doesn't believe in any of this nonsense (none / 0) (#2)

It's pure pandering, designed to misdirect and hook the red meat "Nuke the Islamofascist" nutjob crowd, the bible thumpers, the nativist Lou Dobbs anti-brown people types, and the assorted other unhinged types who form what remains of the GOP base these days, and I doubt that he believes a word of it.

The more he does this, the more he reveals himself to be not another Bush--let alone Ronnie--but another Nixon. I.e. a narcissistic, egomaniacal, anti-social, insecure, paranoid, megomaniacal, vindictive, passive-aggressive, borderline psychotic creep who wants only two things in this world: to have unlimited power, and to be unconditionally loved.

There has been, at least, a method to Bush's madness (and madness it clearly is). I.e. whatever allows me to show up daddy while at the same time earning his respect and getting to play pre-zee-dent for 8 years, and making all those suckers out there suffer. A petty, mentally challenged sadist who somehow managed to become the most powerful person on earth.

With Rudy, though, we're dealing with a whole other category of out of control madman, someone with an actual brain, the capacity, however twisted, for real human emotion, thwarted by massive paranoia, insecurity and megalomania, and enormous ambition and hubris--i.e. another Nixon. God help us if he wins.
