Largest U.S. Embassy in World Will Be in Iraq

Aside from the ridiculous cost and a State Department report saying the U.S. will pay an additional $144 million because the workmanship done so far is shoddy, can someone explain why the U.S. is building the largest U.S. embassy in the world in Iraq?

The embassy, which will be the largest U.S. diplomatic mission in the world, was budgeted at $592 million. The core project was supposed to have been completed by last month, but the timetable has slipped so much that the State Department has sought and received permission from the Iraqi government to allow about 2,000 non-Iraqi construction employees to stay in the country until March.

Do we really need a $736 million, 21 building embassy in Iraq?

    to build many more U.S. embassies around the world.  Dems. chair these committees now.  We need info.

    Embassy my a$$.

    Imperial Palace / Bunker is more like it. Symbol to the whole  world of who "owns" the Middle East, oilfields and all.

    The embassy will be guarded by 15ft blast walls and ground-to-air missiles and the main building will have bunkers for use during air offensives.
    ...
    "It will be more secure than The Pentagon because it will be under constant threat from attack." The Green Zone is the safest part of Baghdad, surrounded by concrete blast walls and checkpoints.
    ...
    "You may as well move the Pentagon to Iraq. It will be amazingly secure but it also flies in the face of claims American is preparing to leave Iraq to be policed and governed by Iraqis.

    this megaplex is that the U.S. Embassy is presently occupying one of Saddam's many, many palces and the Iraq government wants it back.

    Let's see.  We went to Iraq to convert the Iraquis from a Dictatorship to a Democracy.  Yet Bush acts so much like a dictator just like Saddam with his, it's may way or the higway mentality.  We hated the palaces of Saddam so we destroyed many and now we are building our own palace bigger than the ones Saddam had.  Funny how the more things change the more they look same.

    because an "embassy" would be U.S. territory, and when it's attacked it can be labeled a "terrorist attack" on U.S. territory?

    What better memorial to the Iraq war than our new embassy in Iraq.  Instead of buiding a modest headquarters in which Iraqis and Americans can easily interract, we create an ostentatious building in the ultimate gated community that will remind the Iraqis that they have been invaded and are being occupied by foreigners.

    They deserve the best building money can buy because its hard work seeing Iraq through rose colored glasses.  Its hard work not providing the oversight needed to prevent private contractors from looting billions.  Its hard work living in a compound designed to keep them separate from the people they are supposed to be understanding.    Its hard work fixing the facts around the policy.

    Yet somehow they manage.  The results of all their hard work speaks for itself.

    they are importing the destitute who will gladly work for ...

    10 or 20 bucks a day? a week?

    AND they're billing uncle sugar for hundreds or thousands a day per employee?
