Late Night Music: Democracy is Coming...to the USA

In honor of our incoming Democratic majority in Congress.... Democracy, written by Leonard Cohen and performed by Don Henley in 1993 at President Clinton's MTV Inaugural Ball.

You'll need to turn your audio up. I recorded this from a VHS I made back in 1993 to a dvd, then converted it on the computer and uploaded it to YouTube. They all took their toll but if you turn the volume up, it's just great.

The title demonstrates the main problem this country has - on both the left and the right.  Both sides are convinced that there's no "authentic" democracy unless they win.  Any election they don't win was somehow stolen, and indicates a "democracy deficit".

The left and the right both need to recognize that the other side wins from time to time, and that the end of the world doesn't follow.  Just because your favored policies don't get enacted, it doesn't mean that authoritarian government has arrived.

Basic respect for the process would be nice.

Why is it then whenever Don Henley covers a Leonard Cohen song I think to myself that if I had heard this song first, I wouldn't have liked it in the first place?  Whether it is "Democracy is Coming", or "Everybody Knows" someone needs to tell Henley to stop doing Cohen covers.

I have the exact opposite reaction from you.  I think Henley does a great job on both songs and would much rather listen to him sing them than Cohen.  Each to his own, I guess.

    And a great performance.

Too bad it had to be associated with Bill Clinton who later gave us a world record prison population and never ending escalation of the drug war.

Henley should have screamed the song into Clinton's face.

How many tens thousands and thousands of Americans, poor, minorities and nonconformists were butt raped or murdered in American drug war prisons over the next eight years as Bill Clinton hummed that tune and self-rightously considered himself some kind of progressive wonderkind?

Democrats taking over the congress means NOTHING to me. Not as long as the Democratic leadership continues to support the anti-democracy, crime fostering and terrorism funding drug war.

Whenever I listen to Leonard Cohen's "Democracy" or the more recent "The Land of Liberty", which was written post Bill Clinton, I want to rip the heads off of every right-wing Democrat in the nation. there would be no drug war if right-wing Democrats didn't condone it just to appease the extreme right wing in America.

For the millions in the prison,
that wealth has set apart -
For the Christ who has not risen,
From the caverns of the heart -

    For the innermost decision,
that we cannot but obey -
For what's left of our religion,
I lift my voice and pray:
May the lights in The Land of Plenty
Shine on the truth some day.
