AT&T Ducks Accountability

Corporate accountability does not come easily to AT&T. The corporation's cozy relationship with the NSA prompted a lawsuit (discussed here) seeking redress for violations of customer privacy. Concerned about corporate decisions that harm customers and the corporation, shareholders are asking management to answer some questions.

[Shareholders have] introduced a resolution for consideration at AT&T's stockholder meeting in April. It asks the company's management to explain what steps it is taking to ensure customer privacy and to disclose how much money it has spent on collaborating with the NSA program.

Management has no interest in being held accountable.

AT&T is asking the U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission for permission to exclude the resolution from its proxy statement, claiming it would interfere with business and the company should not have to divulge information because of state secrets privileges, according to a statement released by the groups pushing for the resolution.

this is arrogance on a grand scale. the managers shouldn't have to tell the owners what they've done?

i submit, were i a shareholder of AT&T, i'd be drop-kicking the board of directors out on its collective ass, and putting one in that demands a greater level of responsiveness to the shareholders, the actual owners of the company.

    but, that's just me.

When the story broke last year of the (warrantless wiretaps), I blew a fuse! I was concerned since my IP was in the middle of a merger with at&t. Two days later at&t called and wanted me to upgrade my broadband and we had a little chat. I asked the caller why at&t found it necessary to participate in warrantless snooping and the response was given without the salesperson missing a beat! They quoted the news article and then again asked for more money for faster internet access. I asked again if they gave away info and why they did so without THE REQUIRED WARRANT? Their pathetic and telling answer was " I'm sorry sir but we never comment on matters of national security ". I can't wait till my contract is up up and I can look elsewhere for a provider. Their response told me all I needed to know.
