In a surprise twist in the debate over Iraq, Rep. Silvestre Reyes, the soon-to-be chairman of the House Intelligence Committee, said he wants to see an increase of 20,000 to 30,000 U.S. troops as part of a stepped up effort to “dismantle the militias.”

Sure Reyes, that'll do it. What a dope.

Harman had seen the light. We had gotten her to see the light. She would never have done this.

    Democrats as a party are not against the war.

    Why do you keep acting surprised every time something like this happens.

    If one supports the war and wants it to proceed and end successfully and within a reasonable amount of time, 30k troops is a tenth of what is needed.  30k troops is like throwing a bathtub full of water into the Chicago fire.  Useless AND a waste of a precious resource.

    Congressman Reyes apparently prefers a virtual fence along the border over a real one. His daughter was hired at a company that built some virtual fences back in the 1999-2000. It also turns out that the company did a terrible job of it, too.

    Send them more targets. Right, great idea. While at it maybe the Democrats can try to appeal to more of the religious right who've been supporting this kind of crap all along, since they are so concerned about 'right to life'. Bring them in and help build consensus for idiocy like this, you know?

    Damnit, I was afraid of this. My wife told me the other day she heard him interviewed on the radio on her way home. She said she could not believe how absolutely dumb he seemed.

    that more troops are going to make the slightest difference in Iraq, including Reyes. But nobody wants to say it's over, start withdrawing. That's because the public would sooner hear that there's still hope that the militias can be "dismantled" than hear that there is no hope and the best you can do is to get the troops out of there and cut their losses.

    The sad reality is that the public has no stake in the Iraq war, because it's fought by professional soldiers. Those soldiers will continue to be sacrificed by politicians who are more concerned about saving face than saving lives.
