Almost Sunset Open Thread

It's almost sunset here in Key West. Incredible weather, great company. I'm sitting at the dock of the bay on the Gulf of Mexico, 100 yards from the Atlantic Ocean. We're hoping to see the Green Flash.

    Truffaut had a movis named the Green Ray[Rayon Vert] and it was wonderful.
    I have been fortunate to see the green flash at sunset 2ce and at sunrise once....you know when you've seen it...There's no,"I think I saw it"

    The most incredible sky show in the world in one of the driest deserts, the Atacama of northern Chile. From a mountaintop where the observatory is, looking through about 50 miles of atmosphere creates not a flash, but several seconds of greenish hue. The Milky Way is so bright there it casts a shadow on the ground.

    I did see the flash aspect from the Caribbean once...speaking of the Caribbean...today marks the 50th anniversary of the Granma landing in the Oriente province of Cuba.

    It must be incredible to look through all that stable atmosphere at the rising sun and other objects. Where I live, there's a 2200' differential in elevation and that little bit causes interesting changes in the rising sun....pyramids; one "sun" atop the other etc...you can even see sunspots without special equipment briefly....what it must be like in Chile!
    I did see a fogbow once....entirely violet and it lasted for 12 minutes....

    TL,

    Right after you took that pic, about 10 of us saw the "flash".

    Did you catch it too?

    And wasn't that worth going upstairs for?

    I thought I saw a green flash but it was only for less than a second, so I'm not sure if it was wishful thinking or not.  And yes, it was worth going upstairs.  I had been trying to blog at the beach bar but couldn't resist that last sunset. Glad I went!

    I agree with Frank Rich on this:

      I have not been one to buy into the arguments that Mr. Bush is stupid or is the sum of his "Bushisms" or is, as feverish Internet speculation periodically has it, secretly drinking again. I still don't. But I have believed he is a cynic - that he could always distinguish between truth and fiction even as he and Karl Rove sold us their fictions. That's why, when the president said that "absolutely, we're winning" in Iraq before the midterms, I just figured it was more of the same: another expedient lie to further his partisan political ends.

    He then opines that after the mid-term elections Bush had little to lose by at least noticing that Iraq is in a civil war. This and other disconnects with 'reality' leads Rich to opine that Bush is in a similar state as Nixon was after Watergate when he started talking to pictures on the WH walls.

    I part company with Rich here as I do not see any change, that is change with Bush. The world is continuing to fall to pieces but as long as he thinks that he is funneling money and power to the right places while playing his favorite game of cowboys and indians, his world will remain our reality.  

    Can't wait until the war crimes trials start. That ought to at least have some impact on the guy.
