A Third World Congressman

It may be time to file a commitment petition against Rep. Tom Tancredo. The man needs some serious medication.

Tancredo managed to cheese off Jeb Bush, of all people, with this remark:

"Look at what has happened to Miami. It has become a Third World country. You just pick it up and take it and move it someplace. You would never know you're in the United States of America. You would certainly say you're in a Third World country."

Although Bush omitted the obvious argument that third world countries aren't as populated with Starbucks as Miami, he made a good point nonetheless: "Miami is a wonderful city filled with diversity and heritage that we choose to celebrate, not insult." You know the end is near when Jeb Bush is the voice of sanity.

Tancredo retreated further into lunacy in response, claiming "fewer city residents consider themselves Americans." He evidently derives this conclusion from his observation that "a growing number of Miami residents don't speak English." It's a safe bet that Americans residing in Miami consider themselves Americans, even if English isn't their first language.

Tancredo disparaged "the illusion of Miami as a multiethnic 'All American' city." So what is the "All American" city? A place without ethnic diversity? That sounds more like a "Some Americans" city than an "All American" place.

Tancredo must not get out very often. The demographic differences between Florida and Colorado aren't extreme (pdf), and even his hometown of Littleton brags about its slow progress toward racial and ethnic diversity. Is Tancredo's treasured Littleton on its way to Third World status?

    populated with the creme de le creme of the Cuban exiles, drooling at the thought of returning to their previous criminal activity, complements of the US corporatocracy.

    to note why miami is a seeming third-world country: the bulk of its immigrants are runaways from castro's cuba. these were welcomed with open arms, starting with the kennedy presidency.

    hence, sections known as "little havana", where time has, for many people, stood still since the 1959 overthrow of batista.

    why mr. tancredo would seem either surprised, or oblivious to this obvious fact i've not a clue.

    he's complaining about legal immigrants that his own party uses to prop up their ridiculous embargo.  I wish they'd make up their tiny minds.

    TChris, maybe you haven't been paying attention, but Tancredo has been making a living piss**g of W and now Jeb.

    His issue is illegal aliens, and has been for 10 years or so.

    Does Jeb believe what he said?  Or does he have to say that as Governor of Florida and a future candidate for other offices?

    Regardless, I agree with the sentiment...

    And I will say this for Tancredo...I know where he stands.  I can't say the same for most politicians...including Jeb.

    Che's Lounge and bernarda actually manage to out-bigot Tancredo. That's not easy.
