A Bird For the President Leads to Bus Driver's Termination

Yes, school bus drivers shouldn't flip the bird while they're on duty. And perhaps, as the Issaquah (WA) School District claims, a bus driver who gave President Bush the finger has engaged in a similar "pattern of behavior," although it would be nice to know whether she's ever been disciplined for prior alleged incidents of a similar nature. In any event, it's fair to wonder whether the school district fired the bus driver only because the president happened to see her making the gesture.

Congressman Dave Reichert called the district's superintendent to report that the president, who rarely takes note of the world around him, happened to notice the upraised finger. Shortly after that, the driver was fired -- a seemingly harsh response to a rather minor incident. Again, it would be useful to know whether lesser discipline has been imposed upon the driver for other work rule violations, and whether a policy of progressive discipline (starting with, for instance, a warning or a brief suspension) has been used with other employees who commit similar violations.

The driver has filed a union grievance. Perhaps the full factual record will become public as the grievance moves forward. At this point, losing a job over a disrespectful gesture seems extreme, particularly when it's the president who deserves to be fired. The district claims the decision isn't political, but would the termination have occurred if the complaint hadn't come from a congressman?

Wasn't the finger, as was George Carlin's 7 words, ruled protected speech?  Not that the constitution applies to the cabal.

The first amendment doesn't protect one from making obscene gestures on the job.  Use some common sense here and relate it to your own personal experience.  If an you ran up to your boss and called him/her a farkin idiot, or called a client a farkin idiot, do you think you should have a constitutional right to retain your job?  If you pulled up to a Wendys drive thru and the person on the other side said "what do you want you slimy turd", how would you react?  If that person got fired would you object?

I think this incident alone justifies this woman's firing.  I am not saying this as a partisan.  If this was done to President Hillary, I might chuckle, but I would still say his was conduct that justified the termination.

Remember, free speech means we need to be wary of the government regulating speech.  Unfortunately, our government allowed the regulation of speech through the McCain Feingold legislation.  But we'll gat that one overturned with our next justice.  And I am hearing good things about that.  ;)

Ummm...isn't the bus driver GDub's boss?  IMO, she was giving him his annual job performance review.  He flunked.

Flipping the bird is as American as apple pie...and it sure is protected speech in my book.

This bus driver should get a medal of freedom for understanding free speech better than our poltiticians sworn to uphold it...not a pink slip.  Hopefully the union earns their dues here and gets the job back.

Is it known if there were any kids on the bus at the time of the bird flipping?

I long for the days when the inauguration was basically an open kegger.  The president among his people.  Andrew Jackson's day I think.

Now they got a bubble around 'em 24-7 and even the bird cannot penetrate.  Lame.

than I would've been. Just like the guy who saw Cheney in some mall, walked past him, then turned and return to say something to him. These are better people than me. I'd be slapping, scratching, kicking, screaming words I learned in the Army....then, I be on the phone to Jeralyn.....

The bus driver should be ashamed.  Anyone who disgraces themselves to this extent in front of the kids deserves to get canned.

The question boils down to, was the termination a result of political pressure or otherwise.

TChris is correct in questioning the district who claims past behavior "justifying" the termination.  Where is the record?

That, and in conjuction with the congressmans lies, would lead me to believe yet another Repuke coverup is in effect.
