Pelosi May Bypass Both Harman and Hastings

Nancy Pelosi's pick for House Intelligence Chair has generated a lot of discussion. The two front-runners were Jane Harman and Alcee Hastings (discussed here.)

Michael Isikoff of Newsweek reports today that Pelosi is now considering two others for the position:

One is Rep. Norm Dicks, a onetime strong Iraq-war backer who has since joined ranks with Murtha and now wants a phased troop withdrawal. The other is Rep. Silvestre Reyes, a quiet Texas lawmaker and former Border Patrol official who opposed the Iraq war from the outset. The aforementioned leadership aide notes that Reyes may now have the upper hand for "political" reasons: the Hispanic Caucus is angry because it has no members in the new House leadership or chairing major committees. Pelosi appears to be "leaning toward" Reyes, the aide says, but "the truth is, nobody knows what she is going to do."

Now, anyone who mentions all of his grandchildren by name in his house biography might pass muster.

As for Mr. Dicks - I know he's from next door in Washington state; other than, his bio is more businesslike. Just the facts, man.

    IMHO you've hit the nail on the head (4.00 / 1) (#5)

I don't want anyone who supported a military action that so clearly violates the Nuremberg Principles heading up the IC. Sorry, if they supported the invasion they should step aside and let someone who got it right take the helm - this is especially true for Harman.

both sides of the aisle be pissed when the decision has not yet been made?

Jim, I know you want total failure on the part of the Dems so you can look smart, but maybe you should wait til they actually do something before you draw your conclusions. Your transparent efforts to cast Pelosi as the devil's handmaiden are juvenile. I'm no big fan of Pelosi after her remarks about Chavez, but your attempts to concoct a conflict within the party is just so Rovian wannabe.

ppj is just not used to the majority doing anything but lockstep. What was it that some enlightened senator called the house under Delay's rule, ah yes, run like a plantation.

Well the democrats disagree with one another and fight it out until a decision is made. I think that is called democracy rather than the fascism ppj prefers.

Che... My point was that Harman would be acceptable to both sides... the post speaks to Nancy P using some one else....

Now, is that really all that complicated??

Nancy P is proving that she has the ability to pis& off both sides of the isle. Harman has proved that she's no one's huckleberry and just might have garnered some support from both sides.

Of course that isn't what Nancy P is about, as she most ably demonstrated by her support for Murtha...

The Demos deserve the hole Nancy P is digging.

...either of these gentlemen, but, regardless of what the Hispanic Caucus thinks and despite any political agenda they might have, I would personally rather see someone with active law enforcement experience in the post.

LE officers tend to look at things with a slightly more jaundiced eye and most, perhaps not all, are trained to look at situations objective, especially when it comes to use of deadly force.

But by saying this I certainly do not wish to cast aspersions as to the qualifications of Rep. Dick, who may be even more qualified; I just don't know anything of his background.

Pelosi Could Assume the Intel Chair Herself! (none / 0) (#2)

Here's my email to Congresswoman Pelosi, inspired by Matt Stoller at MyDD:

    ========
Please assume the Chair of the House Intelligence Committee yourself in the 110th Congress. These issues of leadership of that critical Committee would be best served by having the Speaker at its helm.

I am delighted that you will be Speaker and know full well that you'll have things ready to go elsewhere so that Intelligence can occupy your full attention. Our nation needs your best efforts in a new way of seeing us through these difficult times.

My best thoughts are with you as you proceed to make history. I am proud you are my Congresswoman. The thanks of a grateful nation await.  Thank you for your service to California and to the United States of America.

squeaky - I see that you also are incapable of understanding my thoughts that Harman would be acceptable to both sides, but Nancy P dosn't want that...

In the meantime, keep up the ankle biting... I've got my boots on..

You don't seem to be able to understand that Harman may NOT actually be acceptable to both sides.  I think you are somehow confusing acceptable to PPJ with acceptable to both sides.

...and arguing back and forth about how Harmon played "rethug-lite" and supported some of bush's most illegal acts would make it OBVIOUS on its face that Harmon IS NOT the right person for the job.

Sure, the rethugs would love her - but that alone is sufficient cause to replace her.
