Registration Trickery

It isn't difficult to find Republicans in Orange County, but finding new, unregistered-to-vote Republicans these days is a struggle, even in a Republican stronghold. Desperate to register new Republican voters, a group of brainiacs hired by the Orange County Republican Party hit upon a scheme to improve their success rate: they tricked Democrats and Greens into registering as Republicans.

The recruiters visited shopping centers and college campuses and were paid $10 a head for newly registered Republicans in a district represented by U.S. Rep. Loretta Sanchez, a Democrat, prosecutors said. Voters were asked to sign petitions for lower taxes or stricter sex offender laws, then tricked into signing voter registration cards, Orange County prosecutor Anthony Rackauckas said. ... County Democratic Party officials said they have filed more than 500 verified complaints of fraud in the drive.

A dozen recruiters have been charged with felonies for falsely completing affidavits of registration. The OC Republicans have been up to other dirty tricks in the Sanchez race, as recounted here.

Nawww. Must be all a big misunderestimating.

These guys are honest. They're republicans, after all. They have a corner on morality, or they have morality cornered, or something. Right? Right.

Besides, democrats will stop at nothing to create a scandal. Win at any cost power freaks...

    Fraud in Sanchez's district? Nooooo.

Did we forget that Sanchez (Rep, D, CA) won by only 900-something votes in a contest in which it has been determined by a House Oversight Committee investigation that mucho voter fraud (illegal immigrants voting) occurred.

Who do you suppose those illegals voted for, Sanchez? Or her opponent, Dornan?

What's the point of registering them as Repubs?  They aren't going to actually vote that way.  At worst, it will interfere with the victims' attempts to vote in primaries (assuming they do closed primaries), but they probably won't even bother to try since they weren't previously registered.

Trying for a morale boost?  That'll backfire, because their voter turnout will drop.

I suspect that these guys were paid to go out and find Republican voters. Whoever was paying them considered a filled-out Republican registration form as a proxy for an actual Republican voter. These guys realized that and decided that they could make more money by signing up every person as a Republican.

TChris wouldn't have posted it if the GOP was the victim, only if they were the perpetrator.

just because someone registers, as anything, doesn't require they vote that way. so i guess my real question is, who cares?
