As kos says, it is hard to get excited about Harold Ford's candidacy for Tennessee Senate when he talks like this:

"I do not support the decision today reached by the New Jersey Supreme Court regarding gay marriage. I oppose gay marriage, and have voted twice in Congress to amend the United States Constitution to prohibit same-sex marriage. This November there's a referendum on the Tennessee ballot to ban same-sex marriage - I am voting for it."

Ford deliberately lies about the New Jersey decision to enable him to bash gays. I call this the Politics of Hate. It is despicable when practiced against Ford by Corker. It is despicable when Ford is the perpetrator. I think he is going to lose in Tennessee, mostly because he is black. But, like Markos, my tears will be few when it happens.

Well, he voted for the Torture Bill, too. What did you expect - he has to pander to TN? Or is he reflecting the mores of his constitutents?

In more civilized states, one couldn't get away with running the bimbo and jungle drums ads Corker's been running against Ford. Why should anyone think Ford will be that much different.

Don't get me wrong - as between Ford and Corker, there's no issue. I'll take Ford. But, that's more to gain control of the Senate than to endorse his views.

Going back and re-reading Ford's quote in this post, I conclude he's really being intellectually incoherent.
The NJ decision did not create gay marriage. It said gay couples had to have the same rights and obligations as straight couples. Then, the Court left it to the Legislature to figure out how. The very antithesis of "judicial activism", that.
There are two major ironies in the decision - the Republicans, dissenting, would have gone all the way to gay marriage. Then, the majority's decision really smacks of Plessy v. Ferguson and "separate but equal".
For a minority guy to be ranking on a decision which found the minority was entitled to "equal" (even if "separate"), it's really pretty ironic. Without "equal", Ford gets nowhere in life.

Ford's problem is the Democrat's biggest problem. Instead of addressing the fears of a section of the electorate that they are not going to get to vote for them in any great numbers anyway, they should be keeping the focus on stagnating wages, outsourcing, lack of health care and the myriad of other problems foisted on the lower classes by the Republican big money donors. But the problem of course, is that they cannot focus on these problems because they are competing with the Republicans for these very same dollars.

As the rest of us try to decide which is the lesser evil. Some choice. If this is the democracy we brag about and want to impose by force on the rest of the world, then we truly have nothing to offer to humanity.

He'll make the hometown speeches railing against gay marriage but then endorse judges like the ones responsible for this travesty. Dems have a long proud history of leaving the dirty work up to the courts. Says a lot about their belief in democracy.

Ford supports prayer in schools, thats enough for me not to be able to stomach him.

also democracy is more than just majority rule... its minority rights.

Ya mean like Bush v. Gore? Got any links to that patently absurd notion? It's also amusing that you think the exec/leg/judicial triumverate isn't a part of our democracy. It says a lot about this troll's belief in democracy and America.

The only thing going for Ford is he's lightyears better than the rethug corker. I guess they know their audience, corker's racist attack and ford's homophobic attack must play to Tennesseeans.

Corker is racist. Ford is homophobic. Tennesseeans are both. That's not discourse, it is immature mudslinging.

Do you really mean to tell me that none of the left-leaning members who oppose gay marriage wouldn't do so if it weren't political expedient? All of your vile name calling cannot mask a deliberate ignorance.
