Bush's Former FDA Chief to Plead Guilty

There goes another one. Lester Crawford, who was Bush's FDA director in 2005, has been charged with lying about stock ownership in companies regulated by the FDA. He will plead guilty tomorrow in federal court to the Information filed today.

The court papers also say that Crawford chaired FDA's Obesity Working Group at a time when he and his wife owned stock in soft drink and snack food manufacturer Pepsico Inc., based in Purchase, N.Y., and food product manufacturer Sysco Corp., based in Houston.

The panel Crawford was chairing was making decisions affecting food and soft drink manufacturers. Crawford, a veterinarian, abruptly resigned from the FDA job in September 2005 but gave no reason for his decision to step down. He had held the top position for just two months but had been acting head of the regulatory agency for more than a year.

They need to put a picture of an elephant next to "corruption" in the next edition of Websters...this is getting ridiculous.

This is like totally 'under the radar'. There's something else about this guy. I'll have to find it.

Kitt... Kevin Hayden wrote a good article worth a read on Saturday about this topic, among others - here.

It certainly would have to include Jack Abramoff, Tom Delay, Duke Cunningham, Bob Ney, numerous others under indictment or under well-deserved suspicion for ties to their rigged games: Weldon in Pennsylvania,  Sweeney in New York, Pombo in California,  Hayworth in Arizona, Burns in Montana,  Doolittle in California, Renzi in Arizona, and numerous others.

The Abramoff corruption, after all, leads right to the top of the GOP, despite White House claims that the matter is now closed.

    Appease the wolves (none / 0) (#5)

Anyone else starting to get the funny feelings that not only is no one afraid of rethugs anymore, and that not only is no one is afraid of going after them anymore... but that no one is much concerned with protecting them anymore, and instead is more concerned with letting them be thrown to the wolves to save themselves?

Appease the wolves by letting the weaker, slower members of the herd be taken down, in the hope that the bigger, stronger alpha animals can get away?

Is there a 'sacrificial' mentality developing within in the radical right and the gop and bushco?

For all the low on the totem pole bushco supporters:

"There is still time for you to pretend you were onto them the whole time."

Well following this lead its means that Shrub, in his usual honest and forthright manner, will be pleading guilty to insider trading for the Harkin Engery stock sale

This may not really belong here, but I just wanted to say that it sure is nice to actually see your name attached to posts finally.  With the old system, a person unfamiliar with the site generally never knew who was posting those seemingly anonymous posts....

i think this, like all the other recent cases, will make absolutely no difference come nov. 7. those totally invested in the republican party will vote for whoever they have on the ballot, even if they're currently in jail.

bear in mind, we're talking about people with family values. of course, this would be the soprano family.

You mean like 'doing the same thing while expecting different results', etc. etc. ?

Yes, they're just poor, sad, misunderstood accessories after the fact who deserve our sympathy, right? After you know, all, even the early christians sang songs of praise to their leader while the lions tore them apart them in the Colosseum.

Crawford joins a long list of disgraced Bush appointees and he is one further reminder to voters of the hypocrisy within the GOP...the party that has used morality and values to garner the support of a large block of evangelical voters. It has become increasingly obvious that many of these discredited appointees and politicians were simply motivated by power and profit far more than by their religious values.

As we near the November election, I can only hope that voters take the time to evaluate the divide between the actions of the GOP and the rhetoric they have used so effectively for the last decade. Further, when history records the events since the launch of the "Contract with America", one would likely expect that it will be concluded that the Republican Party abused the trust of their constituents and reneged on much of that contract.
