BlameThe Kids: Kurtz Follows Drudge's Lead

(Guest Post from Big Tent Democrat)

You remember what Drudge said yesterday?

Have you read the transcripts that ABC posted going into the weekend of these instant messages, back and forth? The kids are egging the Congressman on! The kids are trying to get this out of him. We haven't got the whole story on this. . . You could say "well Drudge, it's abuse of power, a congressman abusing these impressionable, young 17 year-old beasts, talking about their sex lives with a grown man, on the internet." Because you have to remember, those of us who have seen some of the transcripts of these nasty instant messages. This was two ways, ladies and gentlemen. These kids were playing Foley for everything he was worth.

And The Note says:

Matt Drudge rules our world. . . . So many media elites check the DRUDGE REPORT consistently that a reporter is aware his bosses, his competitors, his sources, his friends on Wall Street, lobbyists, White House officials, congressional aides, cousins, and everyone who is anyone has seen it, too.

So I expected Howie Kurtz to be all over Drudge. And he was, so to speak.

Among the many depressing aspects of the downfall of Mark Foley--who has now done the inevitable checking-into-rehab thing--is that a number of young people could have blown the whistle on this deceptive congressman in recent years, but didn't. . . . Now I don't want to come down on 16-year-old kids (though some are now as old as 21) who must have been intimidated by the whole thing. Indeed, the power imbalance between a big-shot member of Congress and a lowly page is part of what makes this infuriating.

But did they really think that if they told the outside world that the co-chair of the Exploited Children's Caucus was sending them, or their friends, graphic sexual messages, that their future careers would be ruined? That they would be washed up in politics? Isn't it more likely that they would be hailed as brave for doing the right thing?

You forgot to check Drudge Kurtz -- they set Foley up!!!! So you don't go far enough, according to The Note. Though I do like the way Kurtz slipped in the conspiracy theories from the Right:

Rightwing Nuthouse isn't defending the right wing on this one. Says Rick Moran "The House GOP leadership -- indeed probably many on both sides of the aisle -- knew of Foley's predilections and did nothing about it. Are you trying to tell me that if Republican House pages were warned about Foley 5 years ago that at least some Democratic pages weren't also aware? That's laughable. I'm sure the FBI will have some interesting conversations with former pages that will reveal not only that the Democratic pages had heard the rumors about Foley also but that they had dutifully passed them on to Democratic staffers.

"Foley's sick behavior through the years was suspected, never proven. For that reason, when the email exchange with the ex-Page took place last year, the House leadership dropped the ball by not carrying out some kind of an investigation. Would that have revealed the existence of the IM's and perhaps other things? Maybe not. But any such investigation would have ruined his career and left the leadership wide open to attacks by the left that they were persecuting a gay man. In effect, it was a damned if you do damned if you don't situation which makes the smug charges by Democrats today -- some of whom may have known about Foley as well -- ring a little hollow. Nevertheless, to out a potential sexual predator in their midst should have overrode any other concerns."

Not defending the Republicans? Sheesh. Ah, good to see you are back on Drudge's page Howie. What a wanker. Which reminds me -- Atrios? Here's today's winner no?

UPDATE: Glenn Reynolds endorses blaming the young people.

So why is anyone ever prosecuted from the dateline NBC investigations? Seems to me that the person corresponding with the "offenders" is simply egging them on.

Anyone -- probably even a 16-year-old kid -- knows how vindictive the Republicans are. To blame them for not reporting something so potentially harmful AND embarrassing is whoremongering in the extreme.

I "endorse" blaming young people? How, by quoting Kurtz as you did? I also quote Brendan Miniter blaming the Republican leadership. This "you must endorse whatever you link" theory, which seems to be gaining ground in the blogosphere, strikes me as very silly.

Dear Glenn: Happy to see you do not condone it. So do you condemn it? Do you have an opinion on it, other than it being noteworthy? I think if you explained your thoughts on your links, this mistake could be avoided.

Considering the fact that CNN is reporting that the pages and their families are already getting hate mail, then I think they had every right in the world to think that their future careers might be ruined. Now they also have to fear that their lives are in danger, and Drudge and Kurtz are really helping the situation by blaming the victims here. Disgusting.

now, now children, stop this fighting in the house! take it outside, this very instant! hell, drudge is just irked that he didn't get the chance to play virtual weenie with the kids himself. if ever there were an insult to badly aging, fat gay queens, it would be mr.drudge.

gee Glenn can't tell the difference between only linking to something and linking to it with commentary that shows whether one approves or disapproves of the link. I also note that GR, didn't still deny he endorses blaming the young people. Considering he doesn't appear he allows comments on his site, I'm surprised he'd comment on other sites. But given the standards of a man who says dems are "borderline-traitorous" and thinks interrogation techniques that violate the GenCons and Treaty Against Torture are OK, I certainly wouldn't lose sleep over his shrill peevishness.

Foley's acts were disgusting. Not reporting it is nearly as disgusting. Maybe there were Dems who also knew. The only thing more disgusting than not reporting it is to try to put any responsibility on the victims.

Except the act itself. My head is about to explode from all of this BS.

They might have been afraid of getting blamed for leading poor sick Foley on, which is exactly what is happening. We live in curious times. Clinton's imprudent, but otherwise run-of-the-mill sexual frolic with a consenting adult of the opposite sex was met with a hue and cry from the outraged Republican opposition. Foley's disgusting attempts to lure young boys meets with protection from the same Republicans, and protestations that it was just "naughty", and that the predator is the victim. So now I would like to see the habitual right-wing trolls stand up and speak out on this matter. PPJ, narius, and others (or should I say "et al"?). You can't remain silent on this. I want to hear you speak up for family values and condemn Foley, and Hastert, and Snow, for the snivelling cowards that they are.

That reminds me - where's Joe Lieberman's self-righteous speech about the stain the Republican leadership is leaving on the nations Capitol? I wanna know.

Glenn Reynolds damn well understands how his links are endorsements with plausible deniability. On most links he offers little or no commentary. However the overall commentary on his site is rightwing (which is fine), but the clear, obvious, conclusion is that links that he offers with little to no commentary are in fact endorsed within the context of his views. As others have said, it is clear that his no comments policy on his site, is to ensure that readers cannot correct his errors. Glenn Reynolds is THE most dishonest lawyer professor blogger on the planet, and his actions should in fact be considered unethical by ANY professor. Glenn, your behavior is absolutely disgusting.
