Tony Snow: "Simply Naughty E-Mails"

Think Progess has the video of White House Press Secretary Tony Snow on CNN this morning:

This morning on CNN, Soledad O'Brien asked Tony Snow why "any communication between a 16-year-old and a congressman" didn't "raise red flags -- major, massive red flags" with Speaker Dennis Hastert and others who have known about the communications for months.

Snow responded, "I hate to tell you, but it's not always pretty up there on Capitol Hill. And there have been other scandals, as you know, that have been more than simply naughty e-mails."

Over at GMA, according to the Note, here's what George Stephanopolous had to say: If Republicans knew about the x-rated e-mails, Game Over.

Pulled from The Note, his quote on GMA this morning was: "Right now it's a category 3 hurricane and it's picking up steam. Republicans all across the country are getting questions about it. But here's the key question: Did any Republican leaders know about those x-rated emails? If they did, it's game over. The leadership will have to resign. It will cost Republicans control of Congress. As one top GOP aide told me this morning, 'the place will burn down'."

A reader at TalkingPointsMemo makes a great observation about Hastert's letter to DOJ seeking an investigation.

But his request for an investigation is directed SOLELY at those "sexually explicit communications," and who knew of them, when, and what they did.

....That has NOTHING TO DO with how the Leadership dealt with the emails from Foley to the Page from Louisiana.

Sounds like Snow Job is preparing the troops for more serious relevations. Time for "Bin Laden" to make a few more scary videos to plug into the 24 hour news cycle until this blows over.

It seems pretty clear from news reports elsewhere this morning (to me at least), that Hastert and others in the House Leadership knew Foley was up to no good vis-a-vis the pages. Two further points which need be more widely made, are stated in diaries over on Kos. First, this is the same House leadership which went to such great lengths to intervene in the tragic saga of Terry Schiavo, reconvening in the middle of Easter recess, calling the Preznit back from vacation in the middle of the night to sign the bill, overriding family values for governmental intervention, and all the other atrocities of that saga. Second, this debacle highlights the moral bankruptcy at the heart of the Republican party and limns the line between those Republicans who care about the values they espouse and those who say whatever it takes to gain and keep power, the latter being in charge. As to Snow-job Tony, all that need be said (beyond his being from the Fox News stable) is that his office (under a prior inhabitant, to be sure) was the one which found a way for a homosexual prostitute (bearing references from some with serious partisan regularity) to get his press pass to the White House in a matter of a day or two. As to Hastert's referral to DoJ for an investigation - let's remember (and make an issue of) the fact that the current head of the Criminal Division is a recess-appointed political hack with minimal criminal law experience (but plenty in politics). I expect nothing from the DoJ on this until well after the election.... And, for that matter, Hastert looks entirely too much like Bernard Cardinal Law - the Boston Archbishop who protected and shuffled pedophile priests for years - for comfort.

BEFORE he became a US Congressman, Foley served long term in the Florida Legislature with ANOTHER Young unmarried REPUBLICAN Legislator and THEY were known for being long term "Room Mates" with the rumor being that they were MUCH MORE than "Room Mates" This other Legislator's name??? CHARLIE CHRIST

You have to understand that in the republican party "Morality=Expediency" and has no value other than ias a selling point.
