Bush Requests Airtime for Speech During Path to 9/11

Unless the pressure on ABC proves too much to bear, The Path to 9/11 will air Sunday and Monday. Here's a new wrinkle.

In another complication, President Bush has asked broadcast networks to clear time for an address to the nation Monday night at 9:01 p.m., just at the start of the last hour of "The Path to 9/11" on the East Coast. ABC announced plans Friday night to cover what is expected to be a 20-minute speech before resuming the film.

The movie is a partisan distortion of history and now we have to listen to Bush further spin both?

I believe that ABC will "pre-empt" the movie so that the small amount of negativity associated with bush never sees the screen.

With Bush's presentation, isn't this a massive contribution to the Republican Party? I count $40M for the production, and $XX for loss of advertising, plus if it is counted 5 hours of airtime. What is the FEC's view of this nonsense? Can some lawyer see if we can get the FEC to a) force Disney to make a similar contribution to the Dems? b) pay a fine? If I only knew where I could get a hold of some lawyers....

It is funny how much a Right-wing spin, on a supposition of a rumour from some idiotic writer, could cause such consternation on the Left. Regardless of the administration they all knew that a major attack on the US was inevidable but we were all in a denial mode. Dramatisation is OK by me but then again I don't watch much televison so I probably wouldn't be affected by this program much. I would think that ignoring this presentation would be the better option as opposed to drawing media attention to it. But what do I know.

thanks Jeralyn--that's some really sick sh*t. i personally think, however, that it's only right that bush lecture to us about how great his war on terror is going during the ABC/Disney 9/11 thing. but i think that there should be one stipulation: he has to wear a Mickey Mouse hat with ears during his entire performance so that we will all understand the gravity with which he upholds the duties of his office.

Shouldn't the Democrats have the right to equal air time after the speech and before the (no doubt) thrilling conclusion to this dripping grama, er, gripping drama?

Kos is reporting that it's Scaife and his money behind this mess. If one reads history, this is all reminiscent of Goebbels' propaganda buildup in the week leading to September 1, 1939, with the big banner headlines across all the Sunday papers, leading to invasion a couple days later. Same model. And, tell me why won't I be surprised if the text and tenor of the proposed speech just coincidently dovetail nicely with a panegyric to The Unit's [lack of] performance on 9/11 itself.

Nice piece of two-bit huckster-ism perpetrated by ABC and their political overseers at Disney. Calling this a dramatization allows them to play fast and loose with the truth and get the message out to the faithful. They deliberately released a pro neocon pro conservative version for two reasons, one is ratings, and the revenue that those ratings will garner, the second is to engage in the creation of an alternate version of history, which the GOP and conservatives will be pushing as "the truth" when no one is looking. No doubt there will be millions of copies of the unedited version of this movie circulating on the Internet before you can say Dick freakin Cheney . Just the idea that that they're editing out certain portions of the film, which Clinton and members of his staff find objectionable, will just help consolidate the view of every bottom dwelling media critic, providing more ammunition that " proves" the media is controlled by liberals, and that liberals have final say over what gets published or broadcast. The very idea that portions are being expunged implies that this is a sanitized version of history, instead of the disgusting propaganda piece that it is. It won't matter to many Americans that no one in the intelligence community will step forward and say that this anything other than total fiction created by the Wonderful World of Disney. The Bush loving Confederate battle flag waving redneck red staters are already indoctrinating their inbred offspring with a pirated copy of the unedited version of this movie, which is at this very moment playing on every TV in their trailer, in a constant loop, only broken by a short intermissions where pictures of Monica and Bill montage across the screen. These are the same people who have difficulty using the word "people" because it gives them a twinge of liberal-phobia fearing that someone might take them for a progressive. They're just waiting for the Bush administration to implement the great media purge that will finally put an end to this left-wing, tree hugging, pot smoking, Zionist media monolith, which has oh so insidiously hijacked America from the God-fearing pure white folks of this country, who coincidentally share an extra chromosome. Doubtless the GOP will be playing the Clinton redux card for all it's worth for at least the next 50 years in the hopes of keeping their ignorant masses ignorant. I imagine they'll have their own history books and schools at some point, perhaps they'll build walls to separate themselves from satanic influences of the hopelessly debauched godless liberals.

what bush's request says to me is that the movie and the current white house stragegy to make national security the centerpiece of national dialogue pre-election is a coordinated effort... i don't believe it coincidences... And, yes, I DO take it personally

Bush hasn't asked for time on all the networks? I would think he would be expected to say something on monday and on ALL the networks. I mean - it is the five year mark. I wouldn't hold my breath for anything tasteful but I would expect something.

Shouldn't there be a disclaimer just before Bush gives his speech that any facts he presents may be a fictional dramatization of events rather than based in reality.

is this the only way bush can get an audience to listen to him?????? he and company are beyond pathetic, true and complete losers!!! they have no concept of the conscequences of lying. trust is easy to loose but almost impossible to get back. if this country is fooled again, then when we can finally take back this country, any bush follower should be tried for treason. please, please. please let there really be a hell!!!! let there be a special place for bush and company!!!! burn baby, BURN!!!!!!

I don't understand the outrage over a network covering a presidential speech on 9/11. Let's assume ABC had decided not to run what appears to be a distortionary depiction of the events leading up to 9/11. Do you honestly think that Bush would have passed up an opportunity of speaking on the fifth anniversary of 9/11? Do you honestly think that Bush would not try to exploit this anniversary just a few months before midterm elections? It just doesn't make sense that Bush is somehow coordinating this with ABC. It doesn't pass the test of common sense. I think far too many on the left are suffering from conspiracy theories and seeing conservative danger around every corner. It just makes the whole movement look bad, like we are little more than extreme whiners. It also detracts the focus from issues of substance.

It's pretty obvious what Bush is going to do with that time. He's going to try to appear magnanimous, reminding all of America that the "War on Terror" isn't Bill Clinton's fault. He's going to remind all of you that the "War on Terror" is just a reality we must all accept. In order to believe that the "War on Terror" could have been avoided by a more competent Bill Clinton, you have to believe in the concept of "The War on Terror" in the first place. Pairing that message together with imagery of 9/11 - one of exactly two successful allegedly-Islamic terrorist acts on American soil in decades - Bush reinforces "The War on Terror" as a valid reality. "The War on Terror" is the most evil bit of Propaganda created in this nation since Segregation. Don't feel sorry for Clinton, his DLC is as much responsible for the destruction of our domestic freedoms since 2001 as the Republicans are. This is just Conservative Dinner Theatre. Save yourself the grief and ignore it. It's not as if any of you could do anything to stop it; the average American is as powerless against America's Corporations as they are to stop the actions of our Government.

I wonder what Steve Jobs thinks about this? He's the new whale in the bathtub over at Disney, and he's a Democrat. This whole thing is such a terrbile breech of faith. Christ. They didn't even try to include more than half the population in this thing. Just the maniacs who've been running this country into the ground the last 30 years.

Surely nobody is going to watch the fool puppet on the masters television networks...

This is on a par with all the rest of the bushistas unethical violations of the press as an institution. Paying actors to be fake reporters, paying reporters to be fake reporters, paying columnists for their opinion, threatening the press, one-sidedly cooperating with the propaganda-catapulting outlets, refusing to defend bonafide reporters mistreatment in armed conflicts, etc. Otherwise, yes, it might be astute to ignore it. But the cat is out of the bag, eh?

Jimcee "I would think that ignoring this presentation would be the better option as opposed to drawing media attention to it". Have you thought that the dumbest of americans as Scott Adams calls them the "Induhviduals" will take Disney at their word, They did'nt lie about Bambi or Old Yeller so why would they begin to lie now? That is a very good question and what is the answer. Zionism? Does Disney lust for oil? Are they on Bush's secret payroll yet another payment for psuedo journalistic propaganda. I would call for an all out boycott of all Disney products and ABC. They knew what they were doing. They have shown where they are comming from. If their ideal is to misreprsent the truth then who do they lie for? No money to their parks, No viewing of their crap movies and any thing they want to put on TV. ABC had editorial responcibility which shows that they are part of the new propaganda machine for what purpose and to whom's benefit. Zionist or big oil. The new Crusades or you tell me!

Bush League meets Mickey Mouse. Sounds like a perfect storm.

Well, I'll be in an airport around then, but if I can find a bar with a tv I hope it's got the Raiders-Chargers game on. I have no time in my life to watch the worthless crap lies of the Maus Channel or BushCo.

Pinocchio caught lying The ABC 9-11 pack of lies, and now the lies continue, oh yeah, we will edit the thing for America, but still put out the same crap for the rest of the world?!! Give me a break, they just want to get this out as a pure propaganda piece. What's next, the dvd offered as the un edited European version? Their real slimeballs. Tonight we shall see how much editing ABC actually has done, however as a filmmaker I am well aware that story points woven into the story are hard to fully remove, and some stinky residue always seeps through, and in this case, the falsification of history, that seepage would be despicable. History should not be rewritten to please the political party that holds power, this is the first step towards an Orwellian world. I am very disappointed that the Disney Company, a unique American company would give up it's truly American values to support a partisan lie. The effect on the Disney brand could be devastating. ppj, it was presented on Sept 10 because condi et al refused to listen earlier and bush couldn't be bothered during his vacation. They ignored every warning the clinton admin gave them, marginalized the folks responsible for stopping the millenium plot and ignored the briefer of 'bin laden determined to attack the US.' Your heroes are incompetent, cowardly liars, why do you continue to defend them?
