Katrina Anniversary: Open Thread

I haven't yet had an opportunity to watch the Katrina and New Orleans coverage but I'm sure you have. Here's an open thread on all things related to Katrina -- the devastation and the Adminstration's woefully inadequate response. Will this tar Bush's legacy for good?

So far, only Michael Brown has been held accountable. I think that says a lot about this administration.

I wouldn't be a good liberal blogger if I didn't commemorate Katrina's aftermath in some way like so many of my peers and betters. So kindly check out my massive retrospective of what Katrina meant, still means, and what it betrays.

The Democratic Party's response to the Bush administration's pathetic response was equally pathetic. For instance, John Edwards proposed a WPA-style program to get the former residents working to rebuild their city. Handled correctly (and not turned into a massive chance for patronage and corruption) that would have pumped money into the region in a proper manner and would also have gotten previously un- or under-employed residents working and taking more of a stake in their city. However, what other Democratic leaders supported - including Harry Reid and others - was the same egregiously anti-American scheme that Bush supported: bringing in illegal aliens to do the rebuilding. So, you paid not just to warehouse Americans in Atlanta and Houston, you also paid an inflated price to connected contractors who used illegal aliens working in unsafe conditions and some of them didn't get paid. And, much of the money that they were paid was sent out of the country. So, when you do some research, you'll see that both parties made the situation much worse than it had to be. Still the best article written on the topic is this one.
For days I have been thinking of Sitting Bull's observation that the United States knows how to make everything, but doesn't know how to distribute it. He was being generous in attributing the lack of equitable distribution of goods to benign ignorance rather than to malign design. But he knew better. Once in Chicago while performing with Buffalo Bill Cody's Wild West, Sitting Bull spoke through his translator to the huge crowd of ragged white men, women, and barefoot children: "I know why your government hates me. I am their enemy. But why do they hate you?"

And one of the most honest images from that tragic event.
