Chuck Hagel: GOP Has Lost Its Way

Sen. Chuck Hagel (R-NE) says the Republican party is in trouble for the fall elections and has lost its way.

"Where is the fiscal responsibility of the party I joined in '68? Where is the international engagement of the party I joined -- fair, free trade, individual responsibility, not building a bigger government, but building a smaller government?"

"I think we've lost our way," Hagel said. "And I think the Republicans are going to be in some jeopardy for that and will be held accountable."

Crooks and Liars has the video of Hagel on Fox News Sunday, in which he reiterates his belief that the U.S. should start withdrawing troops from Iraq within 6 months.

Hagel also said Bush went too far with his warrantless NSA spying.

That was an exciting interview, Chris Wallace got pretty shrill once he heard what Hagel was saying.

If by "way" he means "mind", absolutely. And if by "fair, free trade" he means "toppling the democratically elected governments of Iran and Guatemala to make way for US corporate interests" and by "smaller government" he means... god, I just threw up a little. Anyway, welcome back from lala land, Chuck. Hope you brought your raincoat because there's surely a slime shower headed your way; partly treasonous, 35% of gay-baiting with scattered illegitimate black babies. I wouldn't worry too much about the curt accusations of cowardice and tiny-feet-stamping by right-wing blog commenters, though...

When Hagel votes on the Senate floor the way he blathers on Sunday mornings, then and only then, will I get excited.

Pax is right. Part of the Iraq problem is that there is no legislative check and balance to Bush because the GOP controls both the House and Senate. Bush knows that if the Democrats win control of the Senate and/or the House, the game in Iraq is up. That is why Bush tolerates people like Hagel but criticize Democrats like Lamont who have almost the same position on Iraq as Hagel. They know that Hagel can criticize Bush on Iraq all he wants but so long as the Senate remains in GOP control (thanks in part to Hagel) nothing is going to be done.

This is off topic, but crooks and liars has a link to Kris Kristofferson's antiwar song "In the News". Great song and video.

Yeah Jim...Liberman is on waivers since his release, free to sign with anybody. Personally, I couldn't care less the letter after the name...it's the ideas. If Hagel is serious about some real fiscal responsibility, protecting freedom from executive excess, and smaller government...I say rock on brother. But I fear it's all just rhetoric....again.
