Obsessive News Coverage

Arianna has a good take on the obsessive news coverage of the Jonbenet Ramsey case:

the only people happier than the cable "news anchors" must be Bush, Rove, Cheney and Rumsfeld. When you've basically screwed up the world, and you're headed into a heated anti-incumbent election, it must be a gift from heaven to have a story that, essentially, shuts down the delivery of news.

Plus, we get to see -- again, and again, and again -- that footage of a heavily made-up adorable little girl lasciviously prancing around. Because it's news, right?

What's the point of this post? TalkLeft is one of the places that has been all over the Ramsey case and then you print a post saying how it's all about distraction? Trying to have it both ways?

I've also said I agree the coverage is excessive. I may personally be all over the Ramsey case but I've tried to exercise restraint in not turning TalkLeft into TalkRamsey. That's why I've blogged so little since Wednesday.

There is something to be said in favor of the whole Ramsey thing especially, as I'm kind of expecting, if this turns out to be the wrong guy: as Andrew Card and Rover are well aware - don't introduce a new product in August. The minute the new product launch comes the Tuesday after Labor Day, all this summer crap (including the sad case of Mr. Karr, right guy or not, guilty or not) masquerading as news will be forgotten, and the corrosion caused by Iraq, the continued mess in Afghanistan, and so on, will come back to the fore. Try as they might, the fifth anniversary of 9/11 is coming, and Public Enemy #1, Wanted Dead or Alive, Most Evil Man in the World Osama Bin Laden is still at large. And the fact he still roams the mountains of Asia (or wherever) is the sole fault of the current administration and the Repug party. They've had power, they've misused power, and they've pis*ed away chance after chance at ending the Wah on Terrah, in favor of subverting the Constitution they've sworn to preserve, protect and defend against all enemies, foreign and domestic. People need to keep their eye on the ball.

    The WSWS writes:
From the beginning, in its treatment of the JonBenet Ramsey murder the American media has pandered to and encouraged the very worst instincts in the population: prurience, a fascination with the lives of the wealthy, obsession with celebrity in general. The television networks, daily newspapers and weekly news magazines have wallowed in the gutter in this case and so many others--the Simpson trial, Michael Jackson's legal problems, the Chandra Levy and Laci Peterson murders, etc. The Ramsey case shows the media at its ugliest, most shallow and most ignorant. No doubt a political motive was involved here too. The terror bomb plot in Britain was threatening to unravel, or at least disappoint, the war in Lebanon had not achieved US aims, the conflicts in Iraq and Afghanistan are disastrous. The media instinctively strove to change the subject. What does it know best, what makes it most comfortable? The intersection of sex scandals or sex crimes with the lives of rich or famous people. Both the billionaires who own and operate America's "free press" and its leading figures, for the most part, are human refuse. They write or say whatever suits their immediate purposes, which corresponds to the economic and political interests of the largest corporations, the richest individuals and the most predatory circles in Washington. They lie as ordinary people draw breath. Their behavior in the Ramsey case is of a piece with everything else they do. Nothing they write or say should be given the slightest credibility.

I agree with Arianna, but I also think that if there was no
footage of a heavily made-up adorable little girl lasciviously prancing around,
there would not be such an interest. Look at the Andrea Yates case, even if home video existed, footage of home schooling and church attendance isn't a Neilsen's winner.
