Jersey City Mayor Alleges Police Abused Him
by TChris
The police say Jersey City Mayor Jerramiah Healy "approached the scene and involved himself in the investigation" of a couple who were arguing outside a bar owned by Healy's sister.
Officers warned Mr. Healy that his involvement would get him arrested, but he repeatedly intervened, according to the statement. He was handcuffed, taken to police headquarters and charged with one count each of disorderly conduct and resisting arrest, the statement said.
Why would Healy interfere with a police investigation? His account of the eventful evening differs sharply from the police report.
The mayor said that around 1:50 a.m. he and his wife left the bar to walk home. He saw a young man standing on top of a car, yelling at a young woman on the sidewalk.
"I said, do yourself a favor, get off the car," Healy said. "The Bradley Beach police are probably coming, and they don't play around."
As the man quieted down, five police cars arrived -- including a car each from Avon and Neptune -- and police went after the girl, Healy said. The mayor said he stepped in to tell the officer the young man was more at fault.
Healy showed reporters "wounds above his eyes, and on his ear, wrists and leg -- the result of his being thrown face first to the pavement and being handcuffed."
Healy's wife, Maureen, said officer Terry Browning used his knee to hold her husband's neck to the ground. Browning asked another officer for Mace and then sprayed her husband in the left eye before walking around his prostrate body to spray him in the right eye, she said.
Maureen Healy, 54, held up her right hand to show a bruised and swollen middle finger, and extended a scraped right ankle. She said the injuries occurred when police pushed her to the ground, threatening to handcuff her, after she tried to hand her husband his glasses, which had flown off during the arrest.
Healy says he'll seek criminal charges against the abusive officers. Good luck with that, Mr. Mayor.
