Let's hear it for Mother Nature. Two cloned mules won their qualifying heats, but finished third and seventh in a race won by a mule that was born the old fashioned way.

And Bayta shot her last arrow with a firm, calm certitude, "You won't! I have faith in the wisdom of Seldon yet. You shall be the last ruler of your dynasty, as well as the first." Something caught Magnifico. "Of my dynasty? Yes, I had thought of that, often. That I might establish a dynasty. That I might have a suitable consort.." Bayta suddenly caught he meaning of the look in his eyes and froze horribly. Magnifico shook his head. "I sense your revulsion, but that's silly. It would be an artificial ecstasy, but there would be no difference between it and the genuine emotion. But things are not otherwise. I call myself the Mule - but not because of my strength - obviously -" He left them, never looking back. Asimov Foundation and Empire

Exactly, the mule itself is a sterile hybrid, the offspring of a male donkey and a female horse.

And, despite the presence of two clones amidst all sort of spectators and other mules, no one suddenly was overcome by boils, or developed superpowers and was victimized by a vast secret conspiracy. The mules were not struck down by lightning, and it was an ordinary mule race. Reproductive cloning simply isn't that scary a technology, not in mules, not in people either.
