WhiteHouse.gov in Español

by Last Night in Little Rock

While the President and Congress rail against Immigration and non-English speaking immigrants, even objecting to the National Anthem in Spanish (while the rest of the Administration, including First Lady Laura Bush never got the memo), they are seeking to manufacture an election year issue that Lou Dobbs, of course, could love. After all, if there are 11-12 million illegals in the country, they sure aren't voters. (For additional background, see "Immigration Debate" at WaPo, and note the fact that the State Department has four versions of the National Anthem in Spanish on its website, the first dating from 1919.)

And, we see that the White House website also appears in Español.

"Welcome to America. Now learn the language." "Just kidding. Look us up in Spanish, if need be."

Being the typical American, I don't speak Spanish (but I am not threatened by those who do, so that separates me from politicians), but I'd like to know whether the section on Inmigración, subtitled "Seguridad de la Frontera y Reforma de Inmigración," is the same as the English language version. Surely one of TL's intrepid readers will know. Take the May 25th Presidential statement in Español, for example.

"What is puce, Alex?" "No, I'm sorry, BMB. The color in LNILR's world is actually bright red." The Bush administration would have open borders if they could get away with it. The Bush reelection site even tried to attract Hispanic voters by featuring a Mexican flag. Yes, that's right: the Bush campaign featured a Mexican flag at their site. Bush is even confused over whose country this is: "About 15 years before the Civil War, much of the American West was northern Mexico," Bush says in the video. "The people who lived there weren't called Latinos or Hispanics. They were Mexican citizens, until all that land became part of the United States. In 2003, the FDIC started working with the Chicago Mexican consulate to give home loans to illegal aliens. In 2005, the Department of Agriculture starting giving loans and grants that let Mexican citizens - not Mexican-Americans, citizens of Mexico - buy borderland property. Bush is strongly on the side of LNILR and the Democratic Party in this matter. In fact, he's done more to "liberate Aztlan" than a thousand MEChA chapters ever could.

Why would you have a problem with requiring people who want citizenship to learn English? If you examine history, multi-language, multi-cultural nations have not done well (Yugoslavia and Austria-Hungary come to mind).

Well, hell, why not bring up Iraq and Rwanda, too? Since there's absolutely no difference between the foundings of those two "nations" and our own...

Until recently, immigrants were expected to learn English and assimilate to American culture. There's your difference

JR: You forgot Canada. The never-ending bloody strife between the Francophones and the Anglophones in that bilingual country breaks my heart every time I open the newspaper. I hear the breakup will occur any day now, if the UN troops don't arrive in time.

Regarding the Lou Dobbs smear above, I believe it was deftly handled in the comments here.

how was that a smear of Lou Dobbs All I said was that he should stop using material from a known racists group. If he's not a racist shouldn't be a problem right? Although the title of the article you point us to is titled :CNN Stands By Lou Dobbs' Racist Fantasies and in the update the author says:
And I don't think Lou Dobbs is necessarily a racist either, nor did I ever say that in my post.
Not everyone calling for reform is a racists, but there are racists out there who are trying to take advantage of the situation. You affiliate with them you lose credibility. If this was a mistake fine.

And why are they "manufacturing an election year issue" because they've got nothing else - outside queers, abortion and flag burning - to talk about; everything else they've laid their paws on they've made a travesty of. So we'll make an issue out of something thats been going on forever, that we've never expressed any concern over before, that most of us have profited immensely from and hope the hoi palloi thinks we're sincere and runs with it.
