Hayden Passes on to Full Senate for Confirmation Vote

No surprise here, but General Michael Hayden was approved by the House Intelligence Committee today as CIA Director and now will go to the full Senate for a confirmation vote. Today's vote was 9-3. Voting against him were three Democrats, Russ Feingold, Ron Wyden and Evan Bayh.

The ACLU responds:

"Hayden's public and private support of the NSA's illegal program to pry into the lives of innocent Americans speaks volumes about his willingness to sacrifice the rule of law to cater to this administration's policies. His continued stonewalling in response to legitimate questions from Senators about the extent of this illegal surveillance as well as the CIA's record of torture and unlawful rendition raises serious questions about whether the CIA will continue to ignore the Constitution and federal statutes written to protect civil liberties. We are dismayed that the Intelligence Committee voted to confirm Mr. Hayden without first getting full and public answers from the nominee about the illegal NSA spy program he helped put in place."

    Your post should read SENATE Intelligence Committee - Feingold and the other two are Senators.

    I wish Cindy Sheehan had run for Dianne Feinstein's seat. Diane has become almost as bad as Lieberman and even being a S.F.er when she was Mayor I think she has totally become a Dino. Oh she always asks the right qestions and acts as if our liberties mean something but when it comes down to the vote she always supports Bush. Always.

    All talk, no teeth. Feinstein can bull-oh me. And this guys just gets creepier and creepier looking. The Grinch meets uptight neighbor Mr. Wilson on the old "Dennis the Menace" show. Not to date myself. I only saw it in reruns. I'm young. Ahem.

    Don't get me started on that Repube in sheeps clothing..Feinstein is the quintessential Repube Light.

    Dadler- To me he looks like a degenerate Col. Glen Manning, the guy who got caught in the radiation from an A-bomb and grew 50 feet tall. Although he does also bear a strange resemblance to a dangerous, psychotic Mr. Wilson.

    How spinless can they be? Looks like he will gain approval no sweat. Jane summs it up:
    I know they're the only game in town, but as Glenn Greenwald says, it's hard to get behind a party when its members refuse to stand for anything.
    This is the guy that broke the law in total disrespect of congress. Yes he was following orders but so what. What really shows how self serving these spinless idiots are it the huge protest over searching Jefferson's office. Yes, it is the house but there does not seem to be much difference. Doublestandards aplenty. Cafferty's rant (streaming video) is right on target. atrios

    Yet another check next to Feingold's name. The only question that remains is whether he would vote the way he currently does if he were the tiebreaker. The problem with the evil built into our system, it's hard to tell what is just for show and what is true principle. If I'm forced to choose, Feingold is the only Senate-potential Democratic nominee any real Progressive should feel comfortable with voting for. As far as I'm concerned, his votes against Iraq and the Patriot Act are enough -- all of the other votes are just that much more reassuring. Nobody should get their hopes up though -- the brown shirts and the Corporate propagandists will demonize him and destroy his career soon enough - circa 2007...and all the lemmings will follow.

    Leading Democrats joined Republicans in approving Hayden, the former head of the National Security Agency (NSA) and the current principal deputy director of national intelligence. Hayden is expected to easily win confirmation by the full Senate before the end of the week. Four Democrats and all eight Republicans on the committee voted to recommend Hayden's confirmation by the full Senate, while three Democrats voted against. The four Democrats who voted for Hayden are among the most senior Democrats in the Senate: the ranking Democrat and vice chairman of the committee, Jay Rockefeller (West Virginia); Carl Levin of Michigan, the second-ranking Democrat on the committee; Dianne Feinstein of California; and Barbara Mikulski of Maryland. By ensuring a wide margin on the Senate committee to confirm Hayden, the Democrats have once again given their imprimatur to the Bush administration's unprecedented attacks on democratic rights.

    Just filled out my primary ballot for CA's June 7 election and after reading about Feinsteins vote I just threw it away! Feinstein Liberman all of these fake democrats need to lose their seats. What has happened to our party? I am sick to my stomach!!!
