Neil Young's "Living With War": Listen Now

Update: BradBlog has a streaming version of just the single, "Let's Impeach the President."

It's here. Living With War by Neil Young, including "Let's Impeach the President" which has Bush speaking his lies in the middle.

It's awesome. Go listen.

Listen to the album here

Note: You can only listen to the whole album via streaming, not any particular song.

Mr. Young wants the album heard as a whole. The online streams play through from beginning to end; until the CD is ready, the downloadable copies will be available only as a bundle of the full album. "That first impression is so important," he said. "Instead of just going to 'Let's Impeach the President,' people will have to absorb the whole thing. To understand the songs, you need to understand where the whole album's coming from. It protects my right as an artist to have the work presented the way I created it."

Lyrics to Let's Impeach the President:

Let's impeach the president for lying
And leading our country into war
Abusing all the power that we gave him
And shipping all our money out the door

He's the man who hired all the criminals
The White House shadows who hide behind closed doors
And bend the facts to fit with their new stories
Of why we have to send our men to war

Let's impeach the president for spying
On citizens inside their own homes
Breaking every law in the country
By tapping our computers and telephones

What if Al Qaeda blew up the levees
Would New Orleans have been safer that way
Sheltered by our government's protection
Or was someone just not home that day?

Let's impeach the president
For hijacking our religion and using it to get elected
Dividing our country into colors
And still leaving black people neglected

Thank god he's cracking down on steroids
Since he sold his old baseball team
There's lot of people looking at big trouble
But of course the president is clean

Thank God

This is one of the great and powerful rock albums of all time - I knew immediately, from the first bar of the first song, that I was listening to a voice as old the universe... If you didn't like it, or you didn't get it, you didn't listen to it. You can lead a sheep to truth but you can make him... wake. George - start packing, buddy... you know? You're history, and yes, you'll go down in it. Roger and out, good buddy. What will people do after the garden is gone? Don't need no more lies. Back in the days of shock and awe, we went with what we knew, but now we can't go back. We had a chance to change our minds, but somehow wisdom was hard to find. There's a universe between us now... Some of them are crying cause the soldiers look so gray. Let's impeaccchhhhh... America has a leader... but he's not in the house. America the Beautiful left me in awe, with my jaw on the wet floor...

Well said! Like so many, I've been waiting for a voice to emerge that really speaks to and for me. This album is beautiful, timeless, timely and haunting all at the same time. Neil Young is such an amazing asset to the human race. I am going to buy this CD for everyone I know.

It is wonderful to have Neil Young accompanied by all these voices sing out "all over the land" and all over the world for truth, honor, and dignity of humankind. It truly gives hope while "living with war in my heart every day." (So moving. . . .) "Don't need no more lies. . . ." If the servers have overheated at Neil's Garage--neilyoung.com--and the direct download via hyfntrak.com, try the download music stores at AOL (log on to AOL first), iTunes, Napster, and other download stores. It is free there too (41:52), and the sound quality is excellent. Whereas at 4 a.m. ET I had to be really quiet so as not to wake anyone up, now I can listen to it full blast on my computer, with 5 speakers and the subwoofer turned up, . My house is shaking, and I'm loving it. Can't wait to get the CD and DVD!! I'll play it in my car, volume turned up, as I drive through the villages in mostly-Conservative central upstate New York. . . . "We had a chance to change our mind, Somehow wisdom was hard to find. . . . but we have a chance to change our mind. . . ." The beat goes on. . . . We have a chance!! "Listening to Bob Dylan, singing in 1963" . . . Listening to Neil Young and his choir of 100 singing NOW!

The True Majority Peace Action Campaign features Neil Young's LIVING WITH WAR here. (It's also featured as a sponsored ad via Google.) [Again, if the "Play" option doesn't function, try the music download sites like AOL, iTunes, etc.]

"America the Beautiful" full tilt is giving me chills. This album is not over-hyped. It's the real deal. (I would have loved to have been in the studio while they were recording this! No wonder they were all so moved.)

Gotta say, I was a huge Neil fan in HS and college but had moved on from him over the past couple decades. Listening to this album is stirring up some good old memories...

Neil Young also loves model trains. Has invented model train equipment. May seem off the point, but I don't think it is. Big systems and little systems. Jew no wad eye mane?

Open systems vs closed systems. Or, is closed system an oxymoron?

Here's the direct AOL link; the quality seems clearer than the hyfntrack.com link or the downloads from Neil's Garage. While logged onto AOL, one can get to it via AOL Music, search in "Artists" (not "Albums") for "Neil Young," then one scrolls down and just selects the music. [Choosing the item that I linked earlier called "Get It: New Release: Living With War Download" doesn't seem to work (maybe one needs to be a signed-in paid AOL music subscriber to use that feature).] To listen to the free downloaded album in full (and in part) on AOL's music player: scroll down to "Songs/Videos from AOL Music: Neil Young" and click on the track listed as "Living With War (Full Album)" (41:52) there. (I can access it that way while not logged on to AOL via IE from this post. I don't know if that will work generally for everyone from every browser.) In addition to listening to the full album, as Neil Young prefers, in context, at first and over and over again, one can use the AOL slider to listen to separate tracks of the individual songs again (though unlike the other free downloads from NY's site and hyfntrack.com, the titles of the individual songs don't appear while they are playing). Kudos to Neil Young and the promoters of Living With War at Reprise Records and Warner Bros. Records for thinking outside the box (in so many ways!). :)

Another perspective from David Was --1/2 of Was (Not Was), & contributor to NPR's Day to Day)--in an interview on Countdown with Keith Olbermann (w/ guest host Brian Unger) broadcast on MSNBC last night--click on direct link to video clip ("Rock Music Revolution"). Hmmmn. . . . [OT: clip re: Duke (alleged) "rape case" from last night's The Abrams Report follows the 1st clip.] Well, that dampens the spirit. I had already watched it last night anyway, and I still was excited to hear the album after that. But, then again, I am one of the already "converted" or one of the "choir" being "preached to," so Was does have a point.

Cymro--that DownWithTyranny post was linked in the previous entry on "[Let's]Impeach the President" here list week, but it is worth re-reading! Amazon.com has the CD Living With War available for pre-ordering, giving a release date of May 8th. The article "Neil Young Clobbers the Thought Police" that I linked in my previous post has also been posted in Amazon's "Customer Discussions" I just noticed. [Retail: $18.98/Current Amazon pre-order price: $12.97.] A lot of people, incl. me, who have already listened to the whole album free (and already have it saved as mp3 files), still want to buy it for their collections. It will be a collector's item in addition to everything else it is. [I wonder what will happen when it starts going for auction on e-Bay? It would be great if it were auctioned to benefit progressive Democrats and other progressive candidates! Hello, Democratic Party.]

Susan, I have been a fan of Neil's since the 60's. And for the last 8 years, my son has lead a rock band that plays that plays several NY covers (down by the river, cowgirl in the sand, that era), along with his own songs. So I will certainly be ordering my own copy, and a few to give away too!

This has been a very good week for Neil Young. On Apr. 25th, Reuters issued a press release saying that he had won a bankruptcy court hearing involving Lionel LLC. Some history of his personal and professional interest in model trains and his financial stake in Lionel is also related by Money Mag.'s account based on Reuters here. There are quite a number of other online reports that one can read. (I was stimulated by Dadler's earlier reference to look into it while listening to Living With War yesterday.) Cymro: Keep On Rockin' in the Free World! (Interesting stuff there re: history of the song and Michael Moore's famous music video for it as well as Moore's use of it in the soundtrack of Farenheit 911.) Love way Michael Moore is currently featuring Living With War btw! "Faster than a speeding Minstrel": Neil Young: Our 21st-Century Troubadour!!

[From the Brattleboro, VT newspaper on why it became Al Franken Day on Friday there:]
When he came on to a raucous ovation, a lively [Dan] DeWalt said his impeachment resolution was being duplicated in places such as California, Indiana, North Carolina and Arizona. He said he's received phone calls of support from Republicans and even Evangelicals for his work. He said the resolution was a way of putting the brakes on Bush.
"The American people" may rally behind famed Canadian-American troubadour Neil Young's anthem "Let's Impeach the President" as they, like Young and DeWalt, have had it: "Don't need no more lies":
"The American people have clearly figured out the difference between right and wrong, and Bush is wrong," DeWalt said. "We're pestering the president with these resolutions. Right now, Congress will not vote impeachment out of committee. But the more Congress realizes that the American people are not behind George Bush, they will not be willing to bend over backwards for him the way they have."

Well, since I first posted about Michael Moore's featuring of Living With War and Neil Young as "Faster than a speeding Minstrel," the home page feature has changed make LWW "Link of the Week" lower on the page. But check out the new featured photo of today's Peace March in NYC! Thousands Converge on NYC for Peace "Today we march ... in November we vote." Right on target: album review of Living With War published in today's Chicago Tribune:
"ALBUM REVIEW: 'War' a howl of dissent from rocker Neil Young: Protest album made in 3 weeks," by Greg Kot, Tribune music critic. . . ."
(Worth reading in full.) In terms of the sound, I've been very struck by the use of the trumpet quotation from "Taps" (followed by drums and guitar) at the beginning of "Let's Impeach the President" transitioning into the return of Mariachi sound (from, e.g., "Eldorado" [Freedom], but now more mournful) in the trumpet and guitar riffs throughout that song and in "Shock and Awe." (He may be subtly calling up timely associations also to Immigrants' Rights issues rather brilliantly (unless I'm the only one getting them! ;) )
