Action Alert: Support Feingold's Censure Motion

It's time to pick up the phone. ReddHedd at Firedoglake and Georgia 10 at Daily Kos explain how to take five minutes and support democracy. Here's the contact list. Reddhedd explains in greater detail here and here. Sen. Feingold took a risk, we need to show him we have his back.

Feingold wrote a post at Daily Kos today explaining his motion.

The facts and the case for censure are clear. The Foreign Intelligence Surveillance Act, or FISA, makes it a crime to wiretap American citizens without a court warrant - which is what the President has admitted doing. Before the program was revealed, he also misled Congress and the American people about the wiretapping that was being done. For example, at a 2004 speech in Buffalo, he said, "Any time you hear the United States government talking about wiretap, it requires, a wiretap requires a court order." And at a 2004 speech in my home state of Wisconsin, he said that "the government can't move on wiretaps or roving wiretaps without getting a court order."

When the domestic spying story first broke, the President went from saying he wouldn't be able to talk about it, to suggesting there was no other way to wiretap terrorists, to implying that the FISA law is out of date. He went on to claim that sweeping inherent powers of the presidency or the authorization of force back in 2001 gave him such authority -- neither of which is legally or factually correct. While the President has cherry-picked information before, he cannot do the same with the laws of our land. Censuring the President is not something that should be taken lightly. But the President has BROKEN the law and there needs to be action and accountability.

Update: Feingold will be speaking at 4pm today on the Senate floor.

This whole censure thing is lame...what a waste of time. We are three years or more past due for impeachment proceedings. I appreciate the effort Russ, but c'mon man, do something more worthwhile with your time, like getting the impeachment rolling.

I don't personally believe that impeachment will ever grow wings, but censure just might.

It's about time! I've phoned already

I've never picked up the phone before, but today I did. It's time to make a stand and make a change.

    It's a start.

Do you people get paid directly by Karl Rove, or are you merely 'usefull idiots'? Pleeease let this censure measure go forward. It will have the backing of maybe 17% of actual voters. People like the idea of monitoring the enemy. Because to not do so, would be to violate the oath the Pres. took to uphold the Constitution. Beyond that however, the censure measure will ensure that Republicans GAIN seats in Congress this November. Keep it coming.
