Iraq: The Bloodshed Continues

The Independent today has an article titled Iraq's death squads: On the brink of civil war :

Most of the corpses in Baghdad's mortuary show signs of torture and execution. ....Hundreds of Iraqis are being tortured to death or summarily executed every month in Baghdad alone by death squads working from the Ministry of the Interior, the United Nations' outgoing human rights chief in Iraq has revealed.

Here are today's incidents of violence in Iraq. Among them:

BAQUBA - Three gunmen opened fire on a crowd of teenage boys playing soccer in a drive-by shooting in the Iraqi town of Baquba on Sunday, killing two youngsters and wounding five in what a police official said was a sectarian attack.

BAGHDAD - Six people were killed and 38 wounded in a mortar attack on the southern Baghdad neighbourhood of Dora on Sunday, police and hospital sources said. It was not clear who fired the mortars.

BAGHDAD - Two U.S. soldiers were killed by a roadside bomb in western Baghdad on Sunday, the U.S. military said, bringing the number of U.S. personnel killed since the invasion in March 2003 to at least 2,290.

This war is a disaster. It's way past time for an exit strategy. It's time to bring our troops home. Arianna has more on this.

    Incredible, isn't it? It's hard to see what good our troops are doing there, other than providing more targets for the crazies.

    Arch uber-noecon Bill Kristol says that the US troops have not been serious in Iraq for he last three years. We need to send in more troops. Zawaraki is to blame for the insurgent unrest and civil war. The US is only to blame in that they have not been killing enough people over there, they just are not serious, according to chickenhawk warmonger Kristol. Funny how these cowards are so full of bloodlust, as long as it is someone elses blood. Video at C&L via Think Progress

    One of my friends is an officer in the U.S. Army and is currently stationed in Iraq. I hate to think that he and his troops are in the middle of this. I also hate to think that he is there because of liars in Washington who do things just because they want to and make up the justification as they go along. My friend says U.S. dollars are being poured into huge ratholes populated by redundant contractors. I excerpted several comments from his most recent e-mail, which you can see here. I wish I had something more current, but I have heard nothing from him since he criticized our idiot commander-in-chief.

    Yeah, when I read the Kristol piece I was amazed the he would criticize bush for not being serious while sacrificing 2,300 American lives.

    I suspect the current "government" will be disbanded within a month. Redeploy and impeach.

    Che-If you mean the current Iraqi gov you are right. The various sectarian groups in Parliament are not willing to meet with one another which means that the gov will collapse and new elections will have to be held. al Sadr has just negotiated a deal with the Sunnis to bring them back to the table. One thing that is near consensus, save for the kurds, is that the US occupation must stop. From my point of view the US desperately wants to occupy iraq for the long term with a US friendly gov. The original plan was for Chalabi to rule. Odd that Zaraqui seems to be working for the WH in that now the US can argue that if the troops leave full scale civil war is certain. Coincidentally the new pentagon report confirms that the Iraqi army cannot function without the US occupation's troops to show them how to kill maim and destroy property. Also a coincidence is that the US will not sell the Iraq army heavy artillery such as tanks so that they can be self sufficient.

        British Prime Minister Tony Blair stated that those who committed the attack on the Golden Mosque 'have only one motive: to create a violent sedition between the Sunnis and the Shiites in order to derail the Iraqi rising democracy from its path.'     Well said Mr. Blair, particularly when we keep in mind the fact that less than a year ago in Basra, two undercover British SAS soldiers were detained by Iraqi security forces whilst traveling in a car full of bombs and remote detonators.    Jailed and accused by Muqtada al-Sadr and others of attempting to generate sectarian conflict by planting bombs in mosques, they were broken out of the Iraqi jail by the British military before they could be tried.

    Remember one of the main justifications of apologists for our occupation of Iraq was that it would prevent a civil war. Well, guess what? Even with over 2,000 Americans killed we still couldn't prevent the country from going to hell in a hand basket. In fairness to some of those apologists, that belief in the success of our Iraqi adventure was predicated on an administration that was competent. Unfortunately, we have Bush.

    Well, we could always drop Kristol and the Bush Twins behind enemy lines if he wants to get serious. Then again, there are no enemy lines and he is not a serious person. Since empty gestures and platitudes are all he's ever had to offer let's just tie a yellow ribbon 'round his neck. Tight.

    Congratulations to Bush, who's War has now surpassed, in number of deaths, the War of 1812. War of 1812: deaths- 2260, wounded- 4505; George's War: deaths- 2290, wounded- 17,000.

    Muqtada al-Sadr is preaching for unity between Shias and Sunnis and calls for a massive rally in Baghdad to show Iraq unity calling for an end to the US occupation. He blames the US for the destruction of the Askariyah Shrine at Samarra. There is quite a bit of consensus on this in Muslim countries. There also is widespread belief that the Danish cartoon fiasco was a US plot. Not such a crazy idea when you wonder how Daniel Pipes fits in. Irrespective of who is behind these events the WH neocon agenda and its imperial lust for corporate controlled Diebold democracy throughout the world has scored big time. How? ...Well a normal uninformed American would conclude that the world is going to fall apart if America doesn't take over. The savages are too uncivilized to rule themselves. And all that oil will just go to waste. Not to mention that if we do not keep the war on terror at full throttle the savages will come back to our shores.

    Nearly 25,000 US casualties. How many Iraqis? How nice of our government to turn their country into our war playground, and leave so many families with so many casualties. For what again? Some Mother's Son
