Bob Dole Hired in Dubai Ports Probe, Wife in Senate

Sen. Bob Dole should have known better than to accept a job lobbying for the Dubai ports deal. His wife, Sen. Elizabeth Dole, is one of those who must be convinced of the propriety of the deal. And now, his hiring has become a headache for him.

The chairman of the North Carolina Democratic Party, Jerry Meek, yesterday called on Sen. Dole to remove herself from "any congressional oversight" of the Dubai port deal. "The fact that Dubai is paying her husband to help pass the deal presents both a financial and ethical conflict of interest for Senator Dole," Meek said.

Sen. Dole, amazingly (or maybe not so) is defending her husband's hiring.

"Elizabeth Dole knows that her work is separate from Bob Dole," said her spokeswoman, Lindsay Taylor Mabry. "Bob Dole works for a law firm. Elizabeth Dole works for the people of North Carolina."

Bob Dole now says he won't be lobbying his wife or Congress.

Dole's statement said he will confine his lobbying to the Bush administration. "I have not nor will I 'lobby' Members of Congress on this issue, not even at home," he wrote. "I have not discussed the port issue with any Senator or member of Congress or anyone working for the Congress, nor will I do so in the months to come."

Does he really expect us to believe he was hired to preach to the choir?

While Dole certainly is not the only lobbyist with relatives in Congress, it's still a practice that reeks.

Congress Watch and other watchdog groups have loudly criticized the growing trend. "What better way to buy access to a lawmaker than to hire the lawmaker's son, daughter or spouse as their lobbyist on a lucrative retainer?" said Craig Holman, a lobbyist for Congress Watch.

    you said an attempt to impeach would "rally Bush's base" - following your logic, I would expect to see the rally in full swing in light of recent events.

    Why would he be hired to convince people who are already convinced? A: Because he is a liar.

    et al - Okay, let us condemn the Doyles for their actions. Now, who will join me in talking about Mr. and Mrs. Daschle? Isn't she a lobbyist? Ceaser's Wife It's fine to be partisan. But, really....clean hands, etc., etc.

    When there is a post about daschle, I'd be happy to comment on daschle. In the mean time, this post is about the doles and how bob is lobbying for a foreign country with ties to terrorists that will be allowed access to Coast Guard security info and be in charge of 21, not 6 as previously reported, US ports.

    The few Bush Admin. supporting Republicans I know are really scratching their heads on this one. I remind them GDub and his ilk would trade their mothers to the saudis for a case of Quaker State.
