Sen. Roberts' Suggestion to 'Reform' FISA is 'Clarified'

by TChris

As noted here, Pat Roberts, chair of the Senate Intelligence Committee, isn't particularly interested in protecting Americans from unwarranted surveillance, and seems to think that the best way to protect the president from criticism is to broaden FISA to give the executive branch greater power to intercept domestic communications. Even that isn't good enough for the Bush administration, which must have admonished Roberts for trying to think independently.

Yesterday the NY Times reported that Roberts isn't sure exactly how to reform FISA, but believes that NSA spying requests should still "come before the FISA court." That isn't what the White House thinks, so the Senate Intelligence Committee's majority staff director, Bill Duhnke, had to tell the Times that its reporting "didn't reflect 'the tenor and status' of the negotiations between Congress and the White House." Duhnke assured the press today that Roberts is open to allowing the administration to continue bypassing the FISA court, while preferring that "the entire (intelligence) committee be briefed and involved in oversight issues." In other words, business as usual, with perhaps a few more senators hearing classified information that they won't be able to share with the public. This is oversight?

Accountable to no one......that's the bottom line for this President and his ass-kissers. But opponents are "un-American", huh? When will our citizens wake up?

From the very beginning the whole thing -- Roberts wanting to have court oversight -- smelled to high heaven of deception. Roberts has zero credibility here. Apparently the administration is desperately trying to hide the nature and extent of that surveillance program or whatever else they authorized. If the program/s is as clean as they claim it is they wouldn't mind discussing it openly with both congressional committees in closed hearings. The fact they desperately trying to avoid any meaningful discussion should be telling people something. This is a Deep Throat moment imho, the conversation in the garage already took place, now Congress should do its utmost to find out what the administration is trying to hide here. -- Redoing FISA makes zero sense, the statue is already a travesty of meaningful judicial oversight, proposing to weaken it further is ridiculous.

marty - I don't know how to explain this. but Bush was elected, twice. So you can stop the "accountable to no one" stuff. But, if you want to really pin that on someone, try the FISA judges that are appointed for life...

When will our citizens wake up?
When they stop being so afraid as to hand over their freedoms on a silver platter for a false sense of security. I'm not to hopeful.
