Sports Bet Bust

by TChris

Phoenix Coyotes assistant coach Rick Tocchet allegedly partnered with New Jersey state police Trooper James Harney to run "a nationwide sports gambling ring."

State police Col. Rick Fuentes said an investigation into the New Jersey-based ring discovered the processing of more than 1,000 wagers, exceeding $1.7 million, on professional and college sports, mostly football and basketball.

The enterprise apparently did not involve betting on hockey. Janet Jones, Wayne Gretzky's wife, is among those who allegedly placed bets, along with "about a half-dozen NHL players." Hockey legend Gretzky is part-owner and coach of the Coyotes.

Only 1.7 mill? That's nothing but a drop in the bucket of the multi-billion dollar sports book industry. When we gonna legalize it already?

Hey Sailor, FYI, the cop was booked and Tocchet gets to "travel from his Arizona home to answer charges." Above the law? Special treatment? Dang, I musta missed it in this case. Cops and players/coaches are two groups who don't get to bet on sports, even if gambling is legalized, IMO. Too much potential for conflict of interest.

Patrick, Players/coaches are obvious but I am curious as to your reasons why law enforcement should not be allowed to gamble (legally of course) on sporting events.

What, no SWAT teams? No guns going off accidentally? What kind of bust is that?
