Long Live the Rolling Stones

Half-time at the Superbowl. Absolutely great. I hope they live and play forever.

Update: There was no five second delay imposed on the Stones. They agreed in advance that Mick's mike would be turned down on two words.

Live and play forever? Ummm... "Steel Wheelchairs World Tour, 2025"? I know, I know... I'll shut up now. ;-)

It was great but honestly I don't think these guys are in need of publicity or money and I'm not happy about the deal they accepted for the Super Bowl - ie. they agreed not to sing the "Sweet Neocon" song... They are getting old!

They pale by comparison to the recent Cream reunion. That was a great show and a terrific DVD. I'm going to Rio on Friday and they (the Stones) will be playing a free concert on 2/18 on the beach at Copacabana about a mile from where I'll be staying in Botafogo. Still don't know if I'll go.

    I think they lipsynched it.

When WW3 comes, and the world is a nuclear wasteland, there will only be 2 things left alive. Cockroaches and Keith. God bless the World's Greatest Rock 'n Roll Band. Now... THAT's worth sticking around and putting up with this planet 50 more years for!

I wanted to harass the "I don't like football" comments with scores and stats, but we lost power in my entire complex just after the Stones finished (that was close!). Missed the whole 3rd quarter scrambling over to the ex in-laws to watch the remainder of a rather unexciting game. But the Stones were great.

I didn't see the halftime show, but by God, their new album rocks the house.

they agreed not to sing the "Sweet Neocon" song... Did they play "Respectable"?

I think they rocked at the half-time show. Which makes it unique in the history of Superbowl half-time performances.

I asked about "Respectable" because until I googled the lyrics for it tonight I always thought that the line "You're the easiest lay on the White House lawn" was really "You're a diseased stain on the White House lawn" I'm "Shattered"... ;-(

It was really great! After Aretha Franklin's "Star- Spangled Banner" rendition, which was also great, that's the only part of the SuperBowl that I watched too (well, recorded live, and watched later). (Unfortunately, I could hardly hear Aaron Neville before she started singing too; his voice just didn't project loudly enough. What I could hear was mostly sweet. I just don't think his voice is very well suited to singing the National Anthem in huge stadium acoustics. Perhaps better in a more intimate stage setting, like the Katrina benefit concert.) I thought the Stones' performance of "Satisfaction" was especially fantastic!! I loved the way Mick Jagger introduced it: "This one we could have done in SuperBowl I. . . . But everything comes to he who waits" (chuckle). [Particularly appreciated his classy grammar! :-). Guess it takes an Englishman. . . a knight no less.] Check out this out. Re: their agreeing in advance to a kind of self-censorship: I was glad that the Stones behaved themselves--no 4-letter words, as per the pre-SuperBowl press conference, etc. They can use their habitual language and sing their full repertoire in shows broadcast on cable. We can listen to "Neocon" whenever we want--it is a good song, but, on this occasion, what they did was appropriate: they were playing to a vast (politically) "diverse" SuperBowl audience (which included probably a lot of neocons) on commercial network tv. At least this way they may get asked back!! OK--The Rolling Stones with decorum--who'd have "thunk" it? So whereas the Janet Jackson "wardrobe malfunction" (so to speak) really was tasteless; this performance, in comparison, was--well--tasteful!! I definitely enjoyed it.

I'm a huge Stones fan..(have seen them 3 times) but I thought last night didn't sound good at all! The sound eng. for that one should be fired. Their middle song also sucked! With all the great songs they have written (neocon not being one of them).. I think they could have picked a much better middle song.

I used to be a huge stones Fan. But, come on. There is no grace to their growing old. Sure, we can admire Mick for his atheleticism at age what--65...62..whatever--he obviously has energy that most at his age don't possess. But, to prance around like a teenage girl swinging his hips from side to side,...ah, sorry, it sort of creeps me out. And Kieth, God love him, its about time he sit down and play and put on some trousers that are a little more loose fitting--not attractive. Ron Wood still can fake it, as a rocker, but he is going to have to prepare to age with some grace in a couple of years also. Cut the hair, get some glassess, buy a flannel shirt and jeans with a straw hat, something. These guys aren't even in their forties anymore. Start acting like the elders they are. Fat chance at that though. Their infantilism is abnoxious to say the least. Dylan, Claptan, even Robert Plant for chrissakes, have the wisdom to realize that we all grow old and to use their experience to offer something besides commercialized teenage drivel. For all of you "sweet neocon" admireres out there, my seven year old could have written that. There are much better anti-adminsitration anthems out there by people who have managed to age with some grace out there--John Prines some humans ain't human comes immediately to mind. The Stones have been an embarrassment to the sixties and great rock-n-roll for the past twenty years. Even so, nothing can erase the great contributions they made from 1968-1972 when they recorded Beggars Banquet, Let it Bleed, Sticky Fingers and Exile on Main Street. Those were the days.

Peaches: 1968-1972 when they recorded Beggars Banquet, Let it Bleed, Sticky Fingers and Exile on Main Street. Those were the days. They were the days, weren't they? I would include the "Some Girls" album on that list also, a bit later in the 70's but some great songs on it. "Far Away Eyes" is one of my all time favorites.

i think you people must have seen an entirely different half-time than the rest of us, in reality land. as big a fan as i am of the stones, they bit. if that's the best they can do now, it's time to roll those wheelchairs home, and hang it up. it was the lamest live performance i've seen from them, ever. and don't give me this nonsense about the "stadium acoustics" either, they've played hundreds of stadium concerts, and know what they're doing. of course, given the sorry ass first half of play, their concert fell right in line.

There are some contemporary bands doing some artful anti-war stuff, some real driven ba!! busting music. Take Pet from A Perfect Circle (a reincarnation of the more significant parts of Tool) .... Don't fret precious I'm here, step away from the window Go back to sleep Lay your head down child I won't let the boogeyman come Counting bodies like sheep To the rhythm of the war drums Pay no mind to the rabble Pay no mind to the rabble Head down, go to sleep To the rhythm of the war drums ...
