ABC's Bob Woodruff Injured in Iraq

Think good thoughts for Bob Woodruff, who along with his cameraman, have been seriously injured in Iraq after being hit with an explosive device. ABC will release more details later today. [via Crooks and Liars.]

More from the AP:

The two journalists were with U.S. and Iraqi troops near Taji, about 12 miles north of Baghdad, when the device went off, ABC News President David Westin said. Both suffered serious head injuries and underwent surgery at a U.S. military hospital in the area, the network said.

Woodruff and cameraman Doug Vogt were wearing body armor and helmets, but were standing up in the hatch of the Iraqi armored vehicle when the device went off. No one else was hurt in the explosion, the network said.

Update: They are out of surgery and stable, but not out of the woods.

My sympathies. Too bad his bosses are not showing America how bad it really is over there. Sounds like his injuries were in vain.

My sypathies, obviously, and I tend to agree with Squeaky. Remember David Bloom? What did he die in the service of? Soft-pedaling the story.

While showing concern for Woodruff and Vogt let's not forget the one million plus Iraqi's who've died and the unknown number who've otherwise suffered because of the current war and the preceeding years of draconian sanctions. Their lives are no less valuable that any other lives, including our own.

Thank you for that link, Squeaky. The New York Times provides some updates too. For the past week, I've been thinking that it is now far too dangerous for reporters in the field in Iraq, and that news organizations may be pulling them out. But, given what I've read about Bob Woodruff and Doug Vogt, it seems doubtful that either of them would want that outcome. Perhaps more news organizations will be more critical now of the horrific consequences of this and other wars, and less likely to sit on the sidelines feigning neutrality while nevertheless cheering them on. War is war. It is not a game. It is life and death. I wish Mr. Woodruff and Mr. Vogt speedy recoveries. Unfortunately, their injuries may mean that their lives will never be what they once were. That is being said hundreds of thousands of times over, for every soldier and every civilian and every loved one wounded, maimed, or killed, lives ruined, by the horrors of this war.
