Trent Lott and Karl Rove: Karma Time

Karl Rove was perceived as one who stabbed Trent Lott in the back when he lost his position as Senate Majority Leader to Bill Frist. Today, it was Lott's turn.

Crooks and Liars has the video of Trent Lott today on Hardball.

TRENT LOTT: Well, the question is, that you asked, is he good for American politics? Look, he has been very successful, very effective in the political arena. The question is should he be the Deputy Chief of Staff for Policy under the current circumstances? I don't know all that's going on, so I can't make that final conclusion. But, you know, how many times has the top political person become also the top policy advisor? Maybe you can make that transition, but it's a real challenge, and I think they have to – I do think they need to look at bringing in some more people, you know, old gray beards that have been around this town for a while, help them out a little bit at the White House.

    Lott was not particularly effective as a majority leader, and his leaving was well received within the party base. He should understand that, and I am sure he does. Still, unless he wants to become a known RINO, he should understand it was the Demos and the media who ran him off and quit trying to score points with them.

    Nevermind that Rove is a traitor, right Jim? Lott is pointing out that Rove is wearing two hats to the detriment of the country. Don't let that stop you. You worship party -- you couldn't care less about the country, the democracy, the rule of law, or right and wrong. How to bark on demand for Rove -- that's your gig.

    After President George W. Bush voiced his own harsh criticism of Lott's remarks ("Any suggestion that the segregated past was acceptable or positive is offensive, and it is wrong. Recent comments by Senator Lott do not reflect the spirit of our country. He has apologized and rightly so. Every day that our nation was segregated was a day our nation was unfaithful to our founding ideals."), Lott's position became untenable. It was obvious he would be unable to remain as Senate Republican leader, although the official White House line was that Lott did not need to resign. Lott later agreed with the President's speech. In the aforementioned BET interview, he said, "Segregation is a stain on our nation’s soul... Segregation and racism are immoral." Under pressure from Senate colleagues, and having lost the support of the White House, Lott resigned as Senate Republican Leader on December 20, 2002. Bill Frist of Tennessee was later elected to the leadership position.

    Let's see... George and Karl cut the feet off Trent, Trent kicks Karl as soon as he's down, and now Jim turns on Trent. Not that any of the three even know who Jim is, or would care if they did, but it looks like the rats are in a feeding frenzy now, chewing on each other... wonderful people these... such leadership capabilities... such enormous moral stature... so inspiring... Someone please hand me one of those airsick bags...

    Darkly - To claim that the whole affair was not started and pushed by the media and the Left is incorrect. You know that, I know that. The world knows that. Lott tried to apologize, and they just became more rabid. That should have taught him that you can't deal with the pack once it gets in full bay. Evidently, he didn't catch on. And, as I noted, since he hadn't been particularly effective as a Majority Leader, the base wasn't all that interested in saving him. There's also the small matter of Lott himself playing dumb and dumber with his original statements. He is now compounding his original errors. It will be interesting to see if Mississippi tolerates him.

    Gorge W. Bush : Out of the rubbles of Trent Lott's house -- he's lost his entire house -- there's going to be a fantastic house. And I'm looking forward to sitting on the porch. (Laughter.)

    Darkly and Edger - I find it interesting that you pretend to be concerned about Lott. That brings giggles to the table. Darkly - When someone tells you that Huston Astros won the 2005 World Series, you might want to check around.

    Cool fun fact: at least half the guys in the above quote used to be male cheerleaders. And PPJ currently moonlights as one.
