And the War Goes On

by TChris

To avoid playing the president's game by allowing the Alito nomination to distract from the Bush administration's other blunders, it's worth noting that -- just days after the Pentagon urged the media to ignore the milestone of 2,000 dead American soldiers in Iraq -- the death toll has increased to 2,023.

The six deaths [Monday] bring the number of U.S. soldiers to have died in Iraq this month to 90, the highest number of American deaths there since January when 107 Americans were killed.

The pentagon could easily convince everyone to ignore the "artificial(?)" numbers - just hire Diebold to to the counting...

Char-Lie-Do you also think people are celebrating when they mention the death toll of other wars? The only celebration going on is in your sick mind where you imagine macbre death dances and sadistic torture fetes. Keep them to yourself or get a good doctor.

is not joining the left's celebration the equivalent of ignoring the deaths of soldiers?
Hey, Charley, remember that Clint Black concert the Pentagon held in the Mall on this September 11th? Do explain to me the non-celebration part. Thanks.

Charley Odd you use the word Celebrate. You seem to be ignorant of the fact that the Right and Buschco are the ones who have been celebrating 9/11 for years now. It has been bushbags party favor every time he get's in trouble gleefully trotting out the murder of 3000 Americans for his political benefit.

Char-Lie-Time to go fight for your beliefs. Chickenhawk Char-Lie a fountain, dribbling out his insightful wingnut talking points about the left. Ha ha ha ha. What a dolt. Go where your intelligence can best be served: Iraq. Or are you too impotant to spill your own blood while you urge others to do your bidding? You are the callous one here, 101st keyboard commando. Get off your comfy cushion and into a training program. Our troops need relief and you are the man for the job, or a big coward.

Char-Lie- Inchoherent as usual. You have only pointed out that you listen to RNC spin and repeat it, a bit mangled, but in essence RNC spin.
9/11 has been a boon for Republicans
Are you suggesting that they had something to gain from 9/11? Fascism 101 meets follow the money.

"the left's celebration" Did I miss a party? This is the first that I have heard of it. The veterans that I know are sick of losing good people for no gain. Oh, right, Charley never served, he just attacks those who have.

It would be just sad if 90 soldiers were killed in one month in any conflict. But it is quite a bit more OUTRAGEOUS when one considers that the Bush invasion of Iraq released TWO HUNDRED AND EIGHTY TONS of high-explosives to hostile carbomb manufacturers. Free. Just back up your pickup to Dick Cheney's Walmart of Terror. You need 450 shoulder-fired missiles? No need to pay, just pick them up on your way out of the unguarded building. And don't forget! OUR SOLDIERS ARE ONLY HALF ARMORED, so your bombs are twice as effective as they would be if we actually gave a wicked sh*t. C'mon down to Dick Cheney's World of Warmongering. It's a celebration of military capitalism!!!

PinLA is correct in facts if not screed: None of us want to see more people die in an illegal war. Bushco NEVER secured the weapons dumps, and they are being used against our soldiers. Even after the media spotlight on the lack of armor for our troops ... THEY STILL DON'T HAVE THEM! Thye lied about the reasons for going to war, they had no plan for the aftermath of the war (can you say hearts and flowers, a FREAKING statue to bush in Baghdad square.) Yet somehow thru all of this, more Americans are w/o healthcare, more Americans are below the poverty line, and they want to cut even more benefits because of the rising costs of the war. Jeez, you'd think bush had a war on the US, (at least those of us who aren't rich), rather than iraq, afghanistan (and syria, iran, ... and every other country in the PNAC guide for world domination.)

Sailor, don't you know, no one really cares about the economy. Whe bankruptcy protection was gutted and you're in for a nasty surprise when you get your minimum payment on that 30K crn you walk into work, do you hear anyone complaining about historic levels of Corporate consolidation? Do you hear anyone mention the record profits ExxonMobil just reported with very little hubub from the MSM? Have YOU EVER, heard anyone speculate/investigate a connection between the pre-Katrina rising cost of gasoline/oil to the Energy Summit with Cheney? Have you heard much about the coming impact on the lower middle class through the one-two punch of steadily rising interest rates and the coming Real Estate depression? It's the propaganda, stupid. Now shut up, punch your timecard at your second job, mail off all your bills, and leave everything else to the Yale educated Corporatists.

It is also appropriate to note that the total soldier death toll is undoubtedly larger than reported: discussion of underreporting tactics It is also appropriate to note that the National Guard is taking more than half the casualties, and that NG generally have insufficient equipment compared to line soldiers. They are on their third and fourth tours, and their jobs, houses, cars, and families have been 'returned' to the market, since they won't be needing them. Its not just the number of deaths in Iraq that is troubling. Its why they died. Noone should be asked to give their life for light and transient reasons. Even if there was a total of only one death in Iraq, it would be one death too many.

The amazing news today is that according to the NY Times
and Assoiciaed Press Arab League scuttled secret exile offer for Saddam: U.A.E. officials "DUBAI, U.A.E. (AP) - Deposed Iraqi president Saddam Hussein accepted an 11th-hour offer to flee into exile weeks ahead of the U.S.-led 2003 invasion but Arab League officials scuttled the proposal, officials in Dubai said. The exile initiative was spearheaded by the late president of the United Arab Emirates, Sheik Zayed bin Sultan Al Nahyan, at an emergency Arab summit held in Egypt in February 2003, Sheik Zayed's son said in an interview aired by Al-Arabiya TV during a documentary. The U.S.-led coalition invaded March 19 that year. A top U.A.E. government official CONFIRMED the offer Saturday, speaking on condition of anonymity because of the sensitivity of the issue. Saddam allegedly accepted the offer to try and halt the invasion and bring elections to Iraq within six months, said the official and Sheik Zayed's son. "We had the final acceptance of the various parties...the main players in the world and the concerned person, Saddam Hussein," the son, Sheik Mohammed Bin Zayed Al Nahyan, said during the program aired Thursday to mark the first anniversary of his father's death. Sheik Zayed's initiative would have given Saddam and his family exile and guarantees against prosecution in return for letting Arab League and UN experts run Iraq until elections could be held in six months, the official said. "We were coming (to the summit in Egypt's Sharm el-Sheikh resort) to place the facts on the table," said Sheik Mohammed, who is deputy chief of the Emirates armed forces and crown prince of Abu Dhabi. "The results would have emerged if the initiative was presented and discussed. This is now history." The anonymous Emirates official said Arab League Secretary General Amr Moussa did not bring the proposal to the summit's discussion because Arab foreign ministers had not presented and accepted it as league protocol dictated. At the time, Arab League leaders said the summit decided not to take up the idea, citing league rules barring interference in members' domestic affairs. It was not immediately possible to verify the Emirates claims their offer had been accepted by Saddam, who is being held in U.S. military custody in Iraq and his facing trial on charges of crimes against humanity. Officials from the Egypt-based 22-member Arab League declined comment. But at the 2003 summit, the Iraqi delegation rejected the Emirates proposal, while Iraq's former UN ambassador, Mohammed Al-Douri, said Saddam was not going anywhere. The Al-Arabiya documentary claimed Iraqi officials had dismissed the idea because they did not know Saddam had accepted it. Saddam remained defiant ahead of the U.S.-led onslaught and hid in Iraq until being captured in December 2003. The speculation over Saddam's acceptance of the offer comes three years after the start of the Iraqi war. The documentary also included an interview with Egypt's President Hosni Mubarak, who said THE UNITED STATES WAS AWARE OF THE PROPOSAL. In a January 2004 interview with British Channel 4 TV, former Lebanese president Amin Gemayel said Saddam had rejected calls to leave Iraq and end the 2003 standoff with the United States. Gemayel mediated between Saddam and the U.S. administration. One country that came up in the exile discussions was Belarus but the Emirates official said some governments balked at offering sanctuary to Saddam's notorious sons, Odai and Qusai. Almost all the Arab League's member states are Sunni Muslim-majority countries and the pan-Arab body has kept Iraq at arm's length since the U.S.-led invasion, which most of its members opposed." (end quote) If this is true and the US knew why did we go to War? Why was the public not informed. This seemes to have been an excellent way out?
