i was smitten yesterday by the, yes, i'll say it, LEADERSHIP displayed by fitzgerald in in his press conference... i don't think we could have asked for a better display of what a public official, public SERVANT, could and should be... he was strong, he was cool, he was professional, he was in charge, he was obviously shoe-leather honest... but in conveying all of those things, he resorted to no trickery, no code or catch phrases, no stage props, no boasting, no pandering... i ache on a daily basis for authentic, worthy leaders to come forth and, yesterday, i saw one...

Yes, Fitz gave a strong performance but the time to judge him is when the case is over. We may sing a different song if he doesn't come up with some more indictments. Personally, the one I'd like to see: "rhymes with rainy"

ache on a daily basis for authentic, worthy leaders There are, it seems, honest people with integrity still. It's a shame that media focus seems to cause it to be surprising lately. In daily life I run into more of them than not... many more, in fact most, thankfully. Unfortunately deceit, the tactic of the endlessly repeated big lie, the attitude that "winning isn't everything - its the only thing", and character assassination, seem to be what keeps them out of public life. --- "...after all it is the leaders of the country who determine the policy, and it is always a simple matter to drag the people along, whether it is a democracy, or a fascist dictatorship, or a parliament, or a communist dictatorship ... Voice or no voice, the people can always be brought to the bidding of the leaders. That is easy. All you have to do is to tell them they are being attacked, and denounce the pacifists for lack of patriotism and exposing the country to danger." — Hermann Goering

On today's edition of Meet the Democratic Party: union thugs assault woman at anti-Arnold Schwarzenegger protest, ripping off her cap, ripping up her signs, and beating her with their signs. The First Amendment, left-wing style.

Yeah, BM, but what part of Ann Coulter suggesting that Bin Laden should have bombed the NYT building did you miss? What part of Bush's shock and awe on an innocent country did you miss. Tens of thousands of innocent people have had more than their caps torn away. While you have applauded. This woman may or may not provoked her assault -- she may or may not have been an agent provocateur, which is common practice by you louts. KCAL is as rightwing as POX news, so their film stunt is not necessarily anything but. Where were you to defend my rights when seven guys got out of their cars to have fist fights with me on the night of the invasion? Where were you when my signs were torn from my hands and ripped up? Where were you when rightwing thugs threw ice bags at protesters? Where were you when police bludgeoned a teenager for running away? Where were you when police horses knocked down elderly NYC citizens who weren't even protesting? One incident reported by a winger TV station, and you think that justifies your position? What an imbecilic liar you are -- AGAIN AND AGAIN AND AGAIN.

Sistani is considering giving the US a timetable to withdraw from Iraq after the December elections (article found on Informed Comment). As Juan Cole points out, if he does Bush will have no other option but to acquiesce.

Our task will be to stare him down and get the democracy going. Yes, staring down Sistani worked so well in the past, he wanted elections, we didn't, and we got our way, didn't we?

Whizzy writes: I wonder what you would have said if he had not filed on Libby..... Moot point Whiz... you're losing your edge (y). He indicted Libby for obstructing his investigation. As a self professed poker player, of all people you would know, if you were any good at the game, that the cards are counted when the dealing is done, not after the first card is dealt. Fitzgerald has dealt only his first card, to clear one of the obstructions in his path. His investigation continues... Keep on trolling. TTFN, Whizzy.

PPJ, If Sistani asks Bush to go, then Bush will leave. He will do so for two reasons. First, our occupation will be unsustainable if the Shiites turn against us. Second, we have said that if the Iraqi government asks us to leave, we will leave (here and http://msnbc.msn.com/id/4978361). What you seem to mean by democracy is a government that represents Iraqis so long as it does what we want them to do.

ppj-some people are able to learn from their mistakes others are doomed to repeat, repeat, repeat, repeat. You clearly fall into the latter category, permanent nostalgia must be comforting.

Posted by Jim: "PIL - When did all those terrible things happen to you?" Apparently you can't read. "I am sure you filed a police report. Do you have a copy you can link us to?" File a police report? For what? So they can take fingerprints off my torn signs? You have a HILARIOUS idea of the legal system. No wonder you are such a tool for illicit power.

And if you knew anything about poker you wouldn't be (trying) to quote old songs that are Hollywood BS. First off, the song says: "You never count your money when you’re sittin’ at the table. There’ll be time enough for countin’ when the dealin’s done" And if you knew anything about poker you would know that a good player is counting the money, his, yours, plus what's in the pot at all times. It is called knowing "pot odds." No charge for the education. But please. Try to know what you are talking about when you are trying to write an insult. It improves your odds of not appearing dumb. Like to maybe 1 in 50.... Darkly - Ho hum, you agree with John H. Hey folks! Darkly agrees. PIL writes:

Nope. So that you can prove both incidents happened. Of course filing a false report is a crime... You see... are you ready for this??? I think you are funning us, PIL. ;-)

TWO THOUSANDS EIGHTEEN, Jim. You keep thinking this is funny, and that's only because you haven't got the IQ to regard your own errors, or those of your favorites. You have just been proven UTTERLY WRONG about Valerie Wilson's status. So, what is it? Do you REALLY support outing spies? Traitor.

PPJ The problem with Bush is that he has run out of chips (to use the poker analogy). That is why Bush staring down Sistani will be no better than his staring down the GOP Senators to approve Harriet Miers for the Supreme Court. As weapons go, the Bush Staredown is now about as effective as Monty Python's Holy Handgrenade of Antioch. The longer we stay in Iraq, the weaker the US becomes. I know that when we start withdrawing next year, there will be apologists for the invasion and occupation, like yourself, Bush will claim that the reason is because things have gone so well. We went in on a lie, we stayed in on a lie, and we will leave on a lie.

PIL, I can understand how strongly you feel about the war in Iraq, but I think you went over the line in calling PPJ a "traitor". Unlike rightwing talk radio, we don't have to resort to namecalling because our positions on the issues is stronger.
