I haven't had a chance yet to read other blogger's analysis. The Times has a wrap up. Don't miss Jane and Reddhed at Firedog Lake, Huffington Post, Kevin Drum, Just One Minute, Digby, Billmon, Think Progress, America Blog, Needlenose , Empty Wheel Josh Marshall and Daily Kos (like anyone needs reminding about the last two). I'll be reading all their reactions over the weekend.

It's been a really long day. In addition to all the blogging I ended up doing two radio shows, Majority Report on Air America and Hugh Hewitt and taping a tv blogging segment for On the Story that will air on CNN tomorrow night and again on Sunday. Ed Morrissey of Captain's Quarters was also on. Instead of going to a studio, CNN fedexed us webcam kits with mini-macs and it took a few hours for me to configure it and get working. We'll see how that turns out. I'll also be on Reliable Sources Sunday morning along with Glenn Reynolds and Roger Simon. And I really do have a day job.

All of the blogs have great insights into Fitzgerald and RoveGate, so I hope you read as many as you can, and not just the ones I've mentioned above. You can find great compendiums at Huffington Post, Memeorandum and the Daou Report.

    One bit that hasn't been talked about is the timing of Ashcroft's recusal and Libby's motive for lying. 9/23/03: DoJ authorizes the FBI to investigate the leak 10/14/03: Scooter Libby first interviewed by FBI 11/26/03: Scooter Libby again interviewed by FBI 12/30/03: Ashcroft recuses himself, Comey appoints Fitzgerald January 2004: Grand Jury begins investigation of possible crimes Libby had likely committed the crime of making a false statement prior to Ashcroft recusing himself but was not worried because he thought the investigation would be squashed. Once Ashcroft stepped down Libby could either admit to the early crime or gamble that the journalists involved in his tale would be silent. He gambled and lost. Thanks for all your great work Jeralyn. I learned more about the legal proceeding reading 6 of your posts then listening to 6 hours of TV coverage today. Good luck with your appearances and get some rest :).

    Whatever happened to the "high standards" and the "era of tarnished ideals is giving way to a responsibility era" and to the President who said he would "swear to not only uphold the laws of our land" but also to "uphold the honor and dignity of the office to which I have been elected"? It was all bullsh*t, wasn't it? A conservative con game.

Immanuel Kant provided us with three latin phrases that could easily have been meant to be George W. Bush's motto's, as he discussed dishonest politicians in his essay "Misperceptions of Morals and Politics":
    (1) Fac et excusa. Does he use thin pretexts to seize power in his own country, or, after coming to power, to invade and conquer another nation? (2) Si fecisti, nega. When his policies bring about ruin or failure, does he blame his own subjects for the failures, or place the blame on other nations? Or does he admit mistakes and change course to reflect this recognition? (3) Divide et impera.     In addition to this there were reports last August that brought up information concerning Ashcroft's recusal. Justice Department officials made the crucial decision in late 2003 to appoint a special prosecutor to investigate the leak of the identity of undercover CIA officer Valerie Plame in large part because investigators had begun to specifically question the veracity of accounts provided to them by White House deputy chief of staff Karl Rove, according to senior law enforcement officials. Several of the federal investigators were also deeply concerned that then attorney general John Ashcroft was personally briefed regarding the details of at least one FBI interview with Rove, despite Ashcroft's own longstanding personal and political ties to Rove, the Voice has also learned. The same sources said Ashcroft was also told that investigators firmly believed that Rove had withheld important information from them during that FBI interview. ----- But says one government official familiar with the process: "When Ashcroft was briefed on Rove, that ended the argument. He was going to be removed. And there was going to be a special prosecutor named." ------- The article linked above has more information concerning the issues raised by in the initial post of this thread. Another serious charge that would be possible but wasn't addressed yet is the timing of the notification of the investigation from Ashcroft to Gonzales and then Gonzales to Card to issue preservation orders.     "I ended up doing two radio shows, Majority Report on Air America and Hugh Hewitt" JM, as I drove home last night I was scanning the dial and briefly caught the tail end of Hugh's show (movie reviews or something). Do you know if there is an archive of your segment? I couldn't find anything on his website...

    "Bush says publicly that, "This would be a lot easier to do if the US was a dictatorship. (smirk) And I was the Dictator." So it becomes apparent that there is a lot of weird stuff coming down. Is it a conspiracy involving some of the most powerful folks in the US? The question you must ask is "Are they capable of something as horrific as this?" From the perspective of your Average American", the answer is probably "No." From the perspective of your average North American Indian, Cuban, Vietnamese, Cambodian, Laotian, Philipino, Indonesian, East Timorese, Panamanian, Granadian, Guatamalan, Iranian, Iraqi, Argentinian, Peruvian, Chilean, North Korean, Palestinian, Nicaraguan, Salvadorean, Sudanese, Somalian, Libyan, Syrian and many more, the answer will be a resounding "Yes!"

    There's a lot of stuff to process here. I second your recommendation of billmon, who's exceptionally lucid on the indictments and their implicaitons. I hesitate to add anything to the list. But a blog called No Quarter is run by Larry Johnson, a former CIA official. He offers a unique perspective.
