Daily News Has Ears Inside the Times

Crooks and Liars finds this in today's Daily News:

The New York Times gave Judith Miller 3,454 words in Sunday's paper to defend her actions in the Valerie Plame affair. But we hear Miller didn't appreciate the scourging she got in an accompanying 5,805-word analysis of "The Miller Case." We're told that colleagues heard Miller and executive editor Bill Keller screaming at each other in the hours before the story went to bed. (A Times spokeswoman declined to comment on whether Miller and Keller had traded words.)

Miller is said to have implored Keller to tone down the piece's criticism of her. Nevertheless, it reported that she was "a divisive figure," and that in 2003 Keller told her she could no longer cover Iraq and weapons issues because her reporting about Saddam's supposed weapons of mass destruction was so far off the mark.

Jane at FireDogLake reacts. Arianna has more unanswered questions about the Times and Miller.

Gosh what hutzpah Miller has. The NYT was not even sure Miller was going to write an article until Saturday Morn. Many subscribers did not get the Sunday story as Miller's late in delivery of the story resulted in both stories missing the deadline for the 'bulldog edition'. The Staff article has to be re-written to take into account Miller's late submission. She must be pissed because she is never going to work again for the NYT, and must know it. Oh, and Keller said she could no longer cover Iraq, what did she cover, the UN oil for Food scandal. Wasn't that about Iraq? Judy "run amok" Miller does as she pleases.
Deputy managing editor Jon Landman, who oversaw the reporting team, said the slipped deadline was a result of Miller's delaying. Throughout the previous week, Landman said, Miller gave conflicting signals about whether she would write a story herself or not. "We didn't have her first-person account," Landman said. "We didn't have her perspective on things. We got it a little before noon [Oct. 14]. It was very frustrating.

One good move, I got the same e-mail. It was purportedly from a "Wall St. source." It's bunk. Here's the key. Cheney wasn't on Air Force One to Africa with Colin Powell and the President. So the entire thesis, which includes this:
during the meeting, powell recounted to the senator that he had traveled on air force one with bush and cheney, and brought to their attention a classified memorandum about the issue of whether there was indeed a transaction inolving niger and yellow cake uranium. the document included ambassador joe wilson's involvement and identified his wife, valerie plame, as a covert agent. the memorandum further stated that this information was secret. powell told mccain that he showed that memo only to two people--president and vice president. according to powell, cheney fixated on the wilson/plame connection, and plame's status.
is wrong. Also, Andrea Mitchell says colin powell testified he showed the memo to Ari Fleischer.

Fortunately, our nation's public intelligence agencies (i.e. the press) do a better job of holding people accountable for their work, than the secret ones (the CIA, etc.).

The Daily News seems to be on roll. Tom De Frank writes about how Bush Lied and knew that Rove was involved in the leak back in 2003. Sen Schumer writes a letter to Bush demanding an answer. via josh marshall

Good Lord! Why don't they just fire Miller and be done with it, and her.

The Gray Lady has been having a rough time of it of late, hasn't she? Apart from the neocon-lite hacks of Tierney and Brooks, the apologism of Friedman, and the potentially libelous Kristol, they've got Miller The Craven to contend with as well. Thank god for the likes of Krugman! I say NOW is the perfect time to add that long-overdue comics page! All hail Tom Tomorrow and Get Fuzzy! Yeah, baby!
