Denver's First Snowstorm Arrives

Snow began falling in downtown Denver a few hours ago. 12 inches are predicted to fall here by Tuesday - 18 inches in the mountains. It's a big one. I-70 leading to Vail and Aspen already shut down.

The storm hovered Sunday west of Denver, closing Vail Pass and downing power lines for about 2,000 customers around Breckenridge, Silverthorne and Keystone. Xcel Energy spokesman Tom Henley said it was not clear how long those customers would be in the dark, as repair crews - like most other travelers - were stuck in traffic.

Normally, I'm not snow-crazy, but the first storm of the year is exciting. The clean, white snow, the chill in the air, pulling out the winter clothes - this is just my favorite time of year. Then, in two days, it will be 70 degrees again.

Update: It was a grey day and a gloomy, wet storm. But Denver didn't get it as bad as some places.

i think snow is lovely, on movie screens, postage stamps and book covers, not my driveway. i live in eastern va, for a reason. it's not merely the only civilized part of the country intellectually, but weatherwise as well. while we occasionally do get snow (the wet, heavy, slippery kind, not that weenie, dry stuff you guys get!), it usually has the decency to be gone in short order, leaving us to enjoy the memory, while being able to go about our business unimpeded by it. as a young child, i spent a few years living on long island (my father, a marine, was stationed there), and i yet retain some fond memories of that time: shark warning signs at the beach, and snow piled so deep that you had to tunnel your way out of the house! shortly thereafter, we moved to north carolina, both a physical and cultural shock to the system. while there, my dad was transferred to iceland for a year, while we stayed behind. that winter was the worst eastern n.c. experienced in a century. dad came home on leave for christmas, just in time for a blizzard. he returned to iceland earlier than planned because, as he pointed out, it was warmer in iceland than in n.c. aside from that one instance, i don't recall any significant snowfall in the 3 years we were there. we moved to va after that (land of my birth), and i have remained here since, secure in the knowledge that, absent some mysterious shift in the weather patterns, i stand a greater risk of death by heat and humidity, than by freezing to death. anyway, it's a lot more fun running around half naked in the heat, than having 50 lbs. of clothes on! lol

This is the wet, heavy stuff, cp. That's what we tend to get in the spring and fall. Dry and fluffy (and usually rare) during the winter. Today's storm provided me with an excuse to work from home, so it's a Good Thing.

And just an hour north of you, Fort Collins is currently being blanketed in ... cold, wet, nasty rain. Blech.

I spoke too soon. It is one of those wet bleak, foggy snow storms. Definitely a day to work from home.

Life in the Snowbelt area of upstate NY would make you appreciate your rather temperate winters in Col., VA and even LI as easy. 'Google' Adams Center NY or Barnes Corners NY and you'll be happy to live in the balmy latitudes that you do. Actually it is a lot of fun but you have to be prepared for it. Freezing to death is less likely than having a massive heart attack splitting and stacking firewood. Great backwoods CC skiing through late May and very good salmon fishing right now.

Why is that, roscoe (p coltrain)? Everybody likes the friendly texan. PS y'all got us in the A&M vs Colorado game...now the Astros have to win to make it right.
