Who Will Take the Fall With Abramoff?

by TChris

David Safavian barely had time to resign from his White House position before he was arrested. This article asks how many other "leading figures in the Republican hierarchy that dominates Washington" are threatened by their association (nefarious or otherwise) with Jack Abramoff.

House Majority Leader Tom DeLay, who once called Abramoff "one of my closest and dearest friends," already figures prominently in the investigation of the lobbyist's links to Republicans. The probe may singe other lawmakers with ties to Abramoff, such as Republican Senator Conrad Burns of Montana, as well as [Ohio Rep. Robert] Ney.

Other names mentioned: Republican strategists Grover Norquist and Ralph Reed.

Still no sign that TL has noticed that staffers in Senator Schumer's office have been involved in illegally acquiring credit reports for Maryland's LG Michael Steele. I guess you can't criticize people associated with Media Matters, hmm?

James, I guessed you noticed there wasn't a peep in here about Sandy Berger pleading guilty to stuffing classified material down his BVD's? This T Chris, who talks about associations " nefarious or otherwise" as something to be investigated,is a poster boy for the NEW McCarthyism on the left. Actually it's not new. If you think differently then they do you're their enemy, if you're friends with someone who thinks a little to the right, you're their enemy. Stalinism is a good description of this way of thinking. God help us if the little sawed-off Robespierres like Paul from LA ever got a taste of power....

    You mean this one, jr?
The Democratic Senatorial Campaign Committee said Tuesday two of its employees obtained the credit report of Maryland Lt. Gov. Michael Steele, but that the report was not used or disseminated to anyone and the incident was immediately reported to the U.S. attorney's office. Phil Singer, spokesman for the committee that works to elect Democrats to the Senate, said in a statement issued in Washington that the two employees have resigned their positions.

Quaker, Sailor - I said that TL hadn't noticed - I know other people have. In case it's unclear, I'd like to see Abramoff and everyone associated with him punished to the full extent of the law. I'm not in favor of corruption, period.

Yeah, LWW, the poor defenseless Republicans are really being oppressed by the Stalinist "left". Hardly a day goes by that you don't see our Democratic president burning an effigy of a Republican, or honest conservatives hauled out of their houses and shot by our liberal military. WTF?

    On topic:
Shortly after 9/11, Abramoff signed up as a lobbyist for this consortium of banks that operate according to sharia, or Islamic law. According to the National Journal (Aug 31, 2002), the consortium was created after the attacks as President Bush began cracking down on terrorist financing. Abramoff's job was to spread the word about Islamic banking practices and to refute claims that Islamic banks sheltered money used for terrorist networks. And if anyone needed a good PR man, it was the chairman of the General Council for Islamic Banks, a Saudi businessman named Saleh Abdullah Kamel estimated to be worth in the neighborhood of $ 2.6 billion, who was quickly the subject of intense government scrutiny over his possible ties to terrorist activity. You see, Kamel is also the chairman of Dallah al Baraka Group (DBG), which is suspected of having ties to al Qaeda and other extremist groups, and he was also the co-founder and large shareholder of Al Shamal Bank in Sudan, Osama bin Laden's bank of choice from 1983 onward. He was listed as being one of the seven "main individual sponsors of terrorism" in this report by French researcher Jean-Charles Brisard submitted to the UN Security Council in December 2002. (You might remember that Omar al-Bayoumi, who befriended and provided money to two of the 9/11 hijackers, was once an assistant to the Director of Finance for Dallah Avco, a DBG company that works with the Saudi aviation authority. And the WSJ has reported that the United States believes the Dallah al-Baraka Bank, another DBG company, was also used by al-Qaeda.) Kamel's name also appeared in the "Golden Chain," a roster seized by Bosnian authorities in Sarajevo in March 2002 listing Saudi donors to bin Laden and his associates; and he was named as a defendant in two Sept. 11th related lawsuits: one filed by the victims' families in 2003 and another filed by Cantor Fitzgerald in September 2004 (Although claims of two plaintiffs from the first suit were dismissed, the same claims from other plaintiffs have yet to be.)

Posted by James Robertson: "In case it's unclear, I'd like to see Abramoff and everyone associated with him punished to the full extent of the law. I'm not in favor of corruption, period." So, James, you're saying that you favor the investigation and prosecution of Grover Norquist for either HIS terrorism ties, and/or his Indian Casino influence peddling?

Paul, I'd like to see Norquist's influence fall to a number less than zero, yes. If he's done anything illegal, he should be indicted. At best, he associates with some very bad people.

aside from trying to get taxes reduced to zero, and setting up a feudal system in the united states, what has grover norquist done in his life?

Wow, bold words, James -- I congratulate you. Now, I'd like to hear your view on a couple of real felons who lied the country into an illegal invasion and got 1,910 US soldiers killed, while deploying the National Guard and their equipment in such degrees as to cause the deaths of ordinary Americans in hurricane Katrina. Jimmy Carter worked on nuclear subs when he was in the Navy. When he became president, guess which program got extra funding? George Bush, flew fighter jets when he was in TANG. When he became president, only two fighter jets were available to respond to the largest domestic terrorism attack in history, while he sat on his can in an elementary school. He did nothing to build the air force and fighter jets even though he had MONTHS of warning of an attack. Not exactly the Right Stuff.

(Safavian) who up until Friday was overseeing contracting policy for the multi-billion dollar (hurricane) relief effort has now been charged with lying and obstructing a criminal investigation.
Did anyone else catch this little tidbit about Safavian? As they said during Watergate "follow the money". This is the guy the White House put in charge of procurement policy for Katrina (and now probably Rita). Good grief! First they put an incompetent in charge of FEMA. Then they put a crook in charge of the billions of dollars for the relief. By the way Sailor, I thought logical fallacy #36 was also applicable.
