Tom Brokaw and Dan Rather at the Emmys

If you missed the Emmys tonight, you missed a truly moving segment with a video tribute to Tom Brokaw, Dan Rather and Peter Jennings. At the end, Tom Brokaw and Dan Rather came out - to a standing ovation and talked about Peter Jennings and "their unique brotherhood." They were reporters first, but also friends. Brokaw said Peter has a place in the brotherhood forever.

If Peter were here tonight, Brokaw said, he'd join them in saluting their younger colleagues for covering Katrina so brilliantly the past three weeks. Anderson Cooper and Shepard Smith immediately came to my mind. At this point, Tom Brokaw looked like he was about to cry. I couldn't tell if it was because Peter wasn't there, or because, with Katrina, it has really hit home that the mantle has been passed to the new generation of tv newspersons, and he was really proud of them.

It was the classiest and most moving segment of the Emmys. A close second was David Letterman's tribute to Johnny Carson. Jon Stewart and the Daily Show wins were also good moments.
