Law Schools Offer to Take Tulane and Loyola Students

Law Prof Eric Muller of Is That Legal has set up blogs for Tulane and Loyola law students.

Law schools around the country are offering to admit the Tulane and Loyola students, without tuition. Williamette in Oregon has place for 20 students. UConn as well. Check the blogs.

Many faculty and other community members are offering their homes to the displaced students. What welcome gestures. Albany, NY attorney Terry Kinlon, known to many TL readers for his great posts on how the Administration is failing our veterans, e-mails he and his wife, Law Prof Laurie Shanks, are taking in a law-student and medical student from Tulane and providing their extra car to them:

...there will be a lot of law student-refugees from New Orleans who will need places to live while they're camped out in other law schools and members of the criminal defense bar, everywhere, would probably be delighted to help out with food and lodging and maybe some dry socks for our younger brothers and sisters.

On a sadder note:

Bill Quigley, a New Orleans attorney who has represented several death row inmates in Louisiana, as well as winning a civil suit to improve the living conditions on death row at Angola, and also served on the Board of Directors of the Moratorium Campaign is currently trapped in Memorial Hospital with his wife Debbie.

By a directive from our university president, Arizona State University has opened its dormitories and classes to Katrina victims. This includes ASU's School of Law as well. An expedited registration has been instituted. Private community individuals also are taking in some of these students. For more information, please see the website above, or email registrar@asu.edu (or myself, kade@asu.edu).

Here in Tallahassee, FSU has decided to allow evacuees from Katrina to attend and will charge in-state fees to sophomores and freshmen. On the other hand, local hotels and motels have been asking evacuees to leave to make room for people who reserved rooms for the FSU-Miami football game. On the other hand, there have been folks like the owner of my neighborhood laundromat who let evacuees wash clothes for free and have set up a drop off box for clothes.

I hope the University of Denver steps up to the plate as well.

Illinois State University (where I work) is now accepting students who have been displaced by Katrina even though we've completed two weeks of the semester, and the administration has asked the faculty and staff to assist them in whatever way is needed to catch up. There are apparently a number of Illinois residents who were studying in the affected areas who are suddenly without a school to attend.
